It may not work out perfectly well, but i think nobody can really complain about this. Cole is and was exactly the kind of player this team needs, and one that fans have been clamoring for, for years now. If he plays like garbage, its on the player and the team, not on Gauthier. It's a year too much term wise to my liking, but i think we got arguably the best possible fit for our team that was out there. So kudos to Gauthier for going out and getting him. and 4.5 may seem like a bit much, but considering where the cap is now, it's not that bad imo.

Better having Cole than Leino, Upshall, J.Ward or Ryder TBH. Little overpaid (maybe worth around 4M$) but a better fit than anyone else in Montreal.

I thought the Habs needed a strong tough-minutes RW who excels 5-on-5. There was exactly one guy on the market who fit that bill.

And look what happened. Just what the doctor ordered.

PG's first major UFA signing. Pretty impressive. Yeah, it's a lot of term and money, but you gotta pay for UFAs.

lol thought of replying his quote and saying same as you , then i realized he probably means 2-3mil more over 4 years, not over 1 year.

Way to go PG!

With Laich off the market, Cole was on top of my wishlist.

Not long time ago, Gainey gave a 3 year X 3.9 million contract to Spacek...

Cole is a bargain compared to Spacek

Outside for Richards, there was no one else on the market who fit us like Cole.

He gives us size, speed and goal scoring ability on the top two lines. He also is a good mentor for Pacioretty. On top of that, he will take some of the workload of Patches and take pressure off Kostitsyn to be physical.

Just came from the trade rumours board, reading about the Cole signing. Every ****ing post is the same thing,

Bruins Fan: Lol way to overpay
Bruins Fan2: 4.5 over 4 years...way to overpay lol
Leafs Fan: Haha terrible contract

People do realise it does take a slight overpayment to sign UFA's don't they? thank god I came back here where the signing is looked at positively. I for one am happy, Cole fills a real need in the top 9, big body, goes hard to the net, 26 goals...it's all good. And we won't have to face him in the playoffs.

At 4.5 mil he is one of the better deals that were signed today...6'2" 205lbs(size a weakness for us) RW with good wheels and a finishing touch...22 ES goals(a weakness for us)...10th in the NHL for forwards with 225 hits(needed to be addressed).

Hopefully he clicks here, should be a perfect fit with Pleks and Cammy.

I thought that for a second but assumed someone would not whine about paying a guy 750k too much a year.

Good day, I would love to see some muscle added to either Defense or bottom 6 but I am prety happy with the lineup.

What a great signing was hoping to see him in a Habs jersey, he is the perfect fit with his speed, grit and size. He also give way more option at offense and will create more space for our smaller guy. This will help the depth greatly IMO. Plus he is an experienced guy with a ring and he has an okay contract.

I would think that Desharnais can play wing where his size will be less a problem, plus he was good there in the playoff. We IMO need a good faceoff guy to replace Halpern so why not bringing one that can hits and fights Konopka is the right man. Then ideally we could trade Spacek and sign one of the good Dman that are still on the market.

Per Wikipedia:

He signed as a black **** with Montreal on July 1, 2011.

Cole's previous contract (2y/5.8M) shows him getting a HUGE raise this time around, but I feel he'll earn it.

I don't get people complaining over the cap hit. The length of the contract I can see people not liking (will Cole be worth that cap hit in 3 years time?), but 4.5 million a year is no big deal for a Top Six winger that's as well-rounded and experienced as Cole, and fits our biggest needs up front.

I mean, who would the critics of the signing rather us spend it on? Or would those critics rather we just left 5 million or more of cap space on the table, doing nothing at all for our team?

Cap space is only useful if you actually use it. Sure, having a bit of cap space flexibility (say, a million or two) is nice for mid-season trade opportunities that may come up, but that's all. Beyond that, cap space mid-season is useless to a team.

Absolutely!

I love this signing for a lot of reasons, the size it gives us up front is huge and it gives us a chance to bump Kostitsyn down the depth chart a little bit which should only help him.

Cammy-Pleks-Cole
Patches-Gomez-Gionta
DD-Eller-AK

That's a SOLID Top 9 if Gomez can return to 55-60pt territory.

I really like this signature!! I wanted Cole because he can score, he hit and he's not afraid of playing in traffic.

Also, a lot of people talks about his injuries.. but I don't think its really that bad.. last 5 seasons.. 82 games, 40 games, 80 games, 73 games, 71 games. Lot of good nhl players have missed more than 64 games in the last 5 seasons.

I also like the fact that he had 24 pts, 13 goals in his last 32 games. He was better as the season progress.

Earth to Lecavalier fans, size is MORE of a problem on the wing.

When Gretzky and Lemieux played on the same line, who moved to wing, the bigger guy or the smaller guy?

When Crosby and Malkin play together, who moves to wing, the bigger guy or the smaller guy?

Across the National Hockey League, centremen average at least one inch and 10 lbs less than wingers.

There is a reason.

Coincidentally, we can now also accept chanting the phrase 'moving at breakneck speed'. All jokes aside, great signing. We have a real strong RW going into next season and rounds out our top-9.

Amazing the instant relief Cole gives our forward depth. Anyone who isn't happy with this signing should get themselves checked.
