SWEET pickup. A little overpaid, but we are paying for the experience too. Great leader to bring to this team. That's the right attitude for the lockerroom - big time.

Now slide Gomez to Phoenix and go after Richards and another Dman.

Yeah, itd be better if he was younger, no history of injuries, ... but there was no UFA guy out there that this team needed more than Cole, nobody. And do some people really think he can only play on home ice if its in Carolina. Look, no guarantees and maybe he doesnt pan out, but this was the correct move by PG. The term and money were fine for a power forward at his age and history, its not an overpayment. We still need a big, tough guy who can hit for bottom 6, if he can also score ie Stewart, then we might actually have 3 scoring capable lines.

Do not forget that Erik Cole was 15th in the entire NHL for the takeaway (65) and 13th for the most hits (225), which is better than any current Habs player.

Add to that 26 goals, which is good for the 44th rank in the NHL. Only Gionta had more goals for us this year.

Cole is something we did not have since a long time here in Montreal. A physical, two way, top six, winger.

Sorry, but no. He might score a bit less than eric cole did last year, but laich is younger, better defensively and a beast on faceoffs.

What's funny is that before last season, I really thought Cole was finished. Kind of steap for someone that you're not sure if he'll be in shape or nor. Don't get wrong i'm happy but sometime being a GM is akin to playing Russian Roulette.

He didn't say cole was a monster? Damn.

I am stoked about this signing, though. Disappointed we didn't get any toughness in the bottom six and our defense still looks unresolved. Still time though.

Might entice Brad Richards the way Gomez enticed Cammy. Richards wouldn't have to dig out his own pucks in Montreal. And he and Markov would be a stunning combo. Just slide Gomez to a cap rich team with a pick if necessary.

Speaking of Gomez, he and Erik Cole played on the same line during the 2006 Olympics

Yes, but Richards would be cheaper than Gomez - he'd actually free up another mil or so in cap space if what I'm reading is true. That would leave us with 4.5 mil to sign a d-man. Or 3.5 to stay safe with the cap.

Darche will be on that line until Eller gets back

Darche-DD-Kostitsyn

Still not a bad 3rd line.

We'll see at what price he will sign

I don't know how much money NYR, TBL, TML can afford to offer him, but Richards is certainly raising his value as we speak by making teams wait

Gomez's contract is unmovable; we are stuck with him

Only bug: he was not so good in his last PO.
And I told you I didn't see it happening because Cole is probably comfotable in Carolina and will re-sign there at a discount. Jokinen and Pitkanen did that, but Cole didn't. Shows what I know

I like the signing even though it's one more year than I feel comfortable with. I dont' think I've liked the length of multi-year UFA signings by the Habs since the lockout (Hamrlik, Plekanec, Gionta, Spacek come to mind) but Hamrlik's worked out pretty well. Cole may not produce on the powerplay but he's a guy who produces at even-strength and can play against opposition top lines... that's not something in abundance.

IF Gauthier can add a 3rd-line winger like Bergfors, Miettinen, or Stewart on a one-year deal the Habs will have three two-way lines next season with the Desharnais line beating opposition goons on the scoreboard. If the Habs do sign a winger like that I will be ecstatic with the way the off-season has turned out.

Basically all that's left is getting:

- a bottom 6 forward with good faceoff skills and one with size and grit.
- re-sign Josh Gorges
- maybe a defenseman with grit and that can play 2nd PP unit.

They were in possition for and need one big move. This was it. Now Gorges and the depth roles to round out the lineup. I'm fairly impressed actually.

I love this signing. I'd rather have him on my team than see him score on us!

Yes over the duration. Because it's not hard signing old players to 1-2 year deals. At 36 are we really going to want to be paying a fragile Cole 4.5m?? I honestly see Jagr putting up very similiar numbers to Cole this year for 1.2m less and not 4 years.
I would have liked to have seen Cole on for 3years/12m. We should have gotten a pay break based on giving him that extra year at 36 years old.

Anyways, I guess we had to spend the money, so we did...

3,5x3 was his value, we overpayed a bit, I'm not glad of the length too but I'm still happy to have him on our team. Now go sign Simon Gagne (3,5x3).

Cammalleri - Plekanec - Cole
Pacioretty - Gomez - Gionta
Gagne - DD/Eller - Kostitsyn
Darche - White/DD - Moen

Also, I guess Cole will take number 20 and Budaj 35.
