not something I would do. We have 2 HUGE holes on our D (Hamonic Amac and Streit are the only good caliber defensemen we have) Jurcina is okay like what I saw from Wishart Reese and Mottau both Suck big time)
Unless Nino can somehow magically become a clone a young Teemu Selanne out 3rd line is in serous trouble)
We have alot to spend to get to the Cap floor
And the best we can do so far is some nobody
I was expecting better (to at least try and get Leino or Gagne. Maybe even bring Bergie back).
it's gonna be another short season
really a dumb signing. Just as dumb as extending Gillies
You think his twenty five points are better than having a solid vet to help your players?
It's good that many of the rest of you are looking at this for what it is, a good signing by your team.

Again, this signing has nothing to do with signing anyone else, signing Reasoner didn't prevent us from signing anyone.
How exactly is this a dumb signing though?
Filled a need? Check
Solid player? Check
Fair deal? Check

This was a good deal. However, it is obvious to everyone the club needs an upgrade on defense and a good wing for Tavares. It's like having a list of things to do starting with picking up your kids at school (most important) to buying post-its for your home office (least important.) Snow came away from his list today with the post-its not only bought, but some of the best post-its you'd ever ask for. That in itself is not bad at all, in fact it's quite good, but there are far bigger needs and they remain unaddressed. The summer isn't over so there's time to accomplish the 2 most important tasks, and Garth still has 20 some odd million in cap space to play with if the internet NHL cap watchdog is correct. The clock is ticking...

Very good post. I agree that Reasoner is a solid pick up. He fits our 4th line center need to a tee and then some. Loved your analogy by the way.
Those tweets from Strang about how Snow thinks we're set at forward now with the addition of Marty. How he is still looking for a top 4 defenseman via trade. For a guy who takes pride in holding his cards close to the vest, he sure has been pretty vocal when he does release some information. On some level, you've got to think that Garth is tooting his own horn because he is trying to prove that he's above overpaying for any UFA. As if he's passively implying that he's the shiznit.
I may be overthinking it, but I'm continually more impressed with him with every move he is making this offseason. I'm gaining confidence that he is really going to pull another Wisniewski and he'll do it with great value. The clock may be ticking, but I think Snowy will answer the bell.
It gonna take a trade, no one wants to play here and a lot has to do with the past and players feeling that we a still so far away from being a contender. I would hope a solid season will turn heads next July 1 but you never know.

If the August 1st vote passes, that will completely change the playing field. On all levels. Wang gets his shiny new stadium and you have to think he'll open up the purse strings. The biggest negative in the heads of UFA's is now eliminated. We'll still have a crazy amount of cap space. The talent level in our system is at it's highest in recent memory. I expect a definite improvement from the team next season, we were a bottom 5 team once again this past season. Best scenario is to make the playoffs and win a round, but progression should be made. Basically, take a happy pill and think about the Islanders.
Next year's UFA class looks a hell of a lot better than this years. It has to because this class is WEAK! I'm dreaming of Zach Parise myself who could very well be available.
The negativity today really is outstanding. Especially considering how awful this UFA class is. People are complaining about letting the likes of Sean Bergenheim(I love Bergie, but come on...) and Tomas Fleischmann(proven STUD) slip through our fingers. Give me a break. I think the majority of this fanbase have been in agreement that including a healthy Streit and the natural progression of our young players, this is a team that will be battling for a playoff spot next season, and that was before UFA. Now all of a sudden "it's gonna be a long season," and "looks like we will be fighting for that lottery pick again."
Did I miss something? As far as I'm concerned, we addressed a pretty big need today and brought in a very solid 4th line center who also will provide some veteran leadership(which shouldn't go overlooked on such a young squad).
Wake up. This team played extremely well the 2nd half of last season. Taking into account just how young this team is and how many injuries they had to deal with, I'd say that is pretty damn impressive. I have a hard time seeing how this is still a lottery pick team if they don't make any big acquisitions.

A new arena, a season with 45+ wins and entry into the second round of the playoffs.
Then 10-20% more of the UFAs will give us serious consideration.
Folks - we're gonna have to become a winner from within. No reason to get excited ... or well, disappointed in our case ... every July 1st. That's NOT when our team is being built.
It's not like we've got something to look forward to, like the 57 Panthers fans or something.

The first line is set. That's the one we're going to war with.
Gonna have to see what urgency Snow feels elsewhere.
All forms of upgrading will be coming slowly, but hopefully surely, from within - and not necessarily this season.
So far, we have fixed a leak in our roof yesterday. That's great, we needed to do that.
Our neighbors are building fancy new additions, swimming pools, gazebos, cabanas.
Our house was already more modest than our neighbors to begin with.
Whatever good we do will have to be compared to the neighborhood we live in. We will be better but the other teams may have improved more than us, even if they spent much, much more money to do it. Spending and having the means are only markers on the way to results.
To make the playoffs and pass some of these teams, we will likely have to improve at least by one solid #2 defenseman, no matter how we do it. With this lineup as of now, we are battling for between 10th in the conference. We don't have that leak in the roof any more, but our house will not be getting H&G awards.
Prust/Boyle/Rupp is a nasty line. Penguins actually did lose toughness today and the Flyers with Pronger and Shelley plus you know they pride themselves on playing though will be difficult. Other than getting suspended twice Gillies is not scary being that he plays 3 min a night if he even plays.I would like to see a tough guy who can play added to the roster, although Rupp was the best when looking at what was available.
You are in Penn, do you live near Philly?
yes, work in the city but live about 20 minutes outside.

Not sure I agree here. No one in the Division is really markedly better. The Debbies simply resigned their own 6th d-man. The Rangers added 2 4th liners. The Pens brought in Sullivan, who isnt the player he used to be, but lost Talbot. The Flyers signed a 40 year old former star and a goalie who's never won a playoff game, not to mention lost Richards, Carter, Leino, and Versteeg.
Is anyone in the East really that much better due to FA? Hard to say with this weak class. Buffalo? maybe, Ehrhoff is nice and if you're a believer in Leino. Florida? Not really feeling what they did adding 3rd and 4th liners, especially since they've lost Vokoun. The Caps? Best thing they did all day was the trade of Varlamov.
Sorry I'm just not seeting these massive upgrades to rosters here.

Who on this market is comparable to a fancy new pool? There were three impact players. The Wiz, Ehrhoff, and Richards. And the Wiz is not the best defensively. Sorry man, but no one made these upgrades. They spent a lot of money, but they did not get back anything more than mediocre talent.
Anybody knocking this signing needs to check their head.
Reasoner is a solid 4th line center who can provide some offense and play the PK. People need to stop swinging from Konopka's jock.
Looks like some posters wanted Garth to throw money at everyone, I'm glad he didn't. Some of the contracts that were handed out yesterday were simply asinine.

Reasoner had 14 goals but he was not the Panthers 4th line center. He will be lucky to get 8 in an Islanders uniform so long Tavares, Bailey and Franzy stay healthy.
He does not bring to what Konopka brings to the table and to me thats a huge downgrade. Who is going to keep people honest?
Just a quick flash of reality Matt Martin and Michael Haley will NOT be on the NHL roster this year. Spot work maybe but we need more than healthy scratch Trevor Gillies.
My prediction: 5 goals 10 assists and next offseason everyone on this board including him in some insane trade proposal that no other team in the league would ever consider.
I'm sure he went after Cole, but, not at the money level that he took with the Habs.
Lets assume the Island to be e a place that free agents really don't consider. What else do we want Snow to do?!
I hear what you are saying but you dont hear what many of us are saying. My complaint isn't that we got Reasoner instead of Richards. My complaint is that Reasoner is this season's Mark Eaton. Four weeks into the season with Tavares getting his head turned to apple sauce we are all going to be *****ing that Konopka is no longer on the team and then other guys will start getting scratched so that Trevor Gillies can scream like a mad man from the bench.
I like the Reasoner signing. Solid 4th line center who can play as a 3rd line center if need be. That's one way how you build depth. I figured that we would have a better chance adding at the bottom than adding at the top on July 1st. There just weren't enough legitimate top-6 forwards floating around free agency. Almost all of the guys that I wanted were re-signed prior.
I'd still love to get someone to slot next to Streit.
I'd love to have our goaltending situation be less confusing.
Obviously, I'd still love to get another top-6 forward.
If no defenders are available at a decent cost in assets, I wouldn't mind giving "The Anton" a two year deal. He'd probably slot next to AMac for our own insurance, and Hamonic would end up eating minutes next to Streit. It's not ideal, but I think we'd generate a lot of offense from the back end. I also wouldn't say no to Martinek coming back for one year. I just want to buy de Haan and some of our young defenders some more time to develop the right way (and give Bridgeport something to root for.)
I'd inquire about Boyes from Buffalo to see if he could be had on the cheap. I'd rather have him in our top-6. If we do add a top-4 d-man, then another one of our guys should be on their way out. Thankfully, we've got some movable contracts that can make sense with a team that wants a bit more cap room.
Finally, I'd sign our RFAs. I'd call it an off-season and let the best two men win the goaltending jobs out of camp.

The signing is good if he is the 4th line center. His stats will probably go down but if he plays a solid PK that is what the team needs.
I think Martin sticks around the entire year and Haley will probably play around 60 games. Who cares about Gillies, unless he is doing a flying elbow or fighting some other useless goon he is 3-4 steps behind the play. The defense (other than Hamonic) and the offense is Charmin soft. They still need to upgrade toughness, if they played in a different division they may have been fine but not in the Atlantic.
Iceage- I live in Philly and watch a bunch of Flyers games, I am sure you watch a good amount of Flyers games. I just do not think we have the toughness or skill to compete with them

Disagree here...Martin will be on this team on 4th line wing possible 3rd liner.
Again, toughness is measured in more than one way. Konopka had a role last year and hat's off to him for taking a lead role in cutting down on the bs liberties that were taken. But - there are more than enough guys to be able to step up and do that while adding more on the ice. Loved Konopka but the guy couldn't play hockey to save his life other than in the faceoff circle. He could never get out of his own and and just did not have any ability other than the faceoffs, fighting and putting us in a hole because of it. The team has graduated hopefully to the next level.
Back to Martin - I think he is pretty much assured of a spot on bottom 6 and we have probably more likely seen the last of Hunter.
FA season is not over...and I have a suspicion that we will be seeing a deal somewhere for a guy like Shane Doan or Ryan Malone (not necessarily these two but those type of guys) - vet top 6 guy that will cost a good prospect or two.

Shane Doan and Ryan Malone have a grand canyon sized gap in trade value. Pheonix would need to absolutely blown away. Tampa would just need to value the cap space saved.

I think the buyout period ended 6/30. I may be wrong but, I think buyouts need to occur before free agent day. Hunter may have been ineligible for a buyout with his injury. I think he gets a chance on the 4th line next year. He is not the greatest option being that he can not skate but, he still has decent hands and we are paying him.

Last year they man'd up, so the loss of Konopka won't affect anything, IMO. Reasoner is a much better hockey player than Z, so I have to disagree with you that this was a bad move. Wait until you see Reasoner 5 games straight before you get mad about this move. That's my advice anyway.
What they can't do is walk into next season, JT's contract season, without any help for him. That is unacceptable and should be met with torches and pitchforks by all of us, IMO. It is more pressing than the upgrade on defense which Garth does seem to understand needs to happen. I was crossing my fingers for Cole, but then again he is an injury waiting to happen so maybe not signing him will end up the wisest action of all. They may also see both needs, but only have the means to move enough kids like Bailey or others to get one of their two needs. Garth may also be lying/playing poker as we've seen from his track record. They may also be holding their breath to see what happens with the NVMC vote.
For me they have until Sept. 1 to get John a real wing for once, and a blueliner. If not, then they go in the fail bucket. If they do get both needs addressed they get my best Rhode Island golf clap.
Anybody knocking this signing needs to check their head.

This.
The only guys signed yesterday that were of particular interest to me were Steve Sullivan and Tomas Fleishcmann. Sullivan's deal was very low-risk, high-reward type deal for the Pens. IMO, one of the best signings made yesterday. If he can stay healthy he can score. If he doesn't, he's on the IR and does not take up cap space.
The Fleischmann contract was extremely foolish. 4 years for a guy who has clot issues? Also a guy, who really hasn't proven that much at the NHL level to have a risk like that taken. Now the meds he's on to prevent these clots are blood thinners. Blood thinners for one of the most intense contact sports in the world is a dangerous proposition. 4 years at 4+ million is borderline retarded for a player like this.
So far so good for Garth. GMs are behaving like fans on July 1. It's a little nuts.

I don't think they have to buy him out if he is physically unable to play. Didn't look so good not that long ago. I think he is done and would be surprised to see him back.
