I'm not questioning that. I'm telling you that you are terribly mistaken if you think he's anything close to a top 4 defenseman at this stage in his career. Both Foster and Sutton suck so it's more of a change of scenery thing.
Depending on the chemistry, I think he could crack our top 4 (barely). I mostly agree with you though. Change of scenery, we get to deal a redundant D-man and add some size and toughness which is severely needed.
Change of sczenary? Sutton is 36. That guy is done.
I don't know about that. I think your wrong about this. Not a bad player at all. When's the last time you saw him play? I actually thought he was older than 36.
Nope, cause you hated Whitney and we love him. See how that works?
I like it

Yup...the problem is that Tambo didn't improve it all that much if at all.
I don't think it's a problem. I believe the solution you speak of would result in a massive overpay and long contracts like you're seeing today. In the position the Oilers are in, they're expecting Petry, Marincin, Klefbom, etc to be solutions in 2-5 years.
The guys Tambo is signing now are vets who will play on the bottom pairings/lines to small contracts in length that buy some time for the young guys to be prepared and not rushed to the show. They'll also help protect the young guys already up.
So we've added Smyth, Barker, Eager, Hordi, and hopefully Sutton to fill those roles. Really all I hoped for besides a veteran center. I'm really glad they haven't blown their wad on these mid level FA's that are signing around the league.
I look at the Sutton move as a good move because we need guys like that. And while he may not be that great, it's a role that Foster isn't going to fulfill.

Out
Struds
Foster
In
Barker
Sutton
That is a pretty decent upgrade! I did not expect a big name d signing......although whoever started this fake Mike Green rumor has my attention....that would change the outlook for next season.....
Not crazy about Sutton, but I'm fine with a Foster-Sutton deal. I'm worried about what the draft pick might be though. Hopefully a low pick. Next year's draft is deep and the Oil would be wise to stockpile as many draft picks as they can.

Other than some toughness...how is this an upgrade?
That defence is still a turn over machine...there isn't one player who can handle some big minutes as a defensive dman. Here's hoping they have a prospect that can fill a hole in 5 years.

tsn text said nothing about a pick. straight up player for player

Petry may be ready in 2 years but the 5 year plan is more realistic for every other Oiler prospect.
With the goaltending as weak as it is I think that Tambo should have supplemented that by upgrading the defence to have the ability to help keep the puck out of the net for the next couple of years.

This is like saying "well aside from your new girlfriend being a lot hotter .... how is she an upgrade?"
Jeez, lol. Toughness is priority no.1 on a small, young team like this.
We are still likely a lottery team next year, we need to focus on making sure our kids are protected.
Turnovers ... even faceoffs .... honestly I don't give that big of a crap about at this stage of our development. Being bad in those areas probably props us up a few spots in the draft anyway which isn't the end of the world.
