I wanted Gagne on July 1st but I'm sure Gillis persued him but the term or $$ wasn't right. (We can't really assume he'd sign here for the same price he signed for either).
Hindsight is 20/20, but the vet forward signing on a short term deal that's looking really good right now is Steve Sullivan - 1 year 1.5M. He looks really good on the wing with Malkin and Neal. His stickhandling and patience has opened up a lot of room and made Neal look very dangerous thus far.
My problem with Sturm stems from the fact that he was signed on July 1st. Had we signed him in August for exactly the same amount, then I wouldn't have nearly as high expectations. But currently, he's sitting there with Samuelsson and Maholtra as people Gillis cherry-picked for whatever money-puck reason, and I can see exactly why for two of those three players it was done. Currently, I haven't seen a single thing that Sturm has done that would put him in the same category, though I'm still willing to let time tell a better story. I would really like to admit my initial opinion of the guy was wrong.
vigneault's lineup shuffle will be interesting once kesler returns from injury next week
i have a hard time believing sturm stays in the lineup considering he's been given alot of opportunity in the preseason and first few regular season games to show anything, and he's contributed about as little as a forward could possibly contribute in those games
I really wanted to like the sturm signing, and maybe something will change, but the only thing I can think of is he is giving someone on the farm another year of seasoning.
better case he takes another 10 gms to improve his game
worst case he can't play the 4th line game because he's too soft and defensively unreliable, then gets waived, picked up by someone else and flourishes there.
But I think it's more likely he gets waived and ends up nowhere. Rayray, get well soon!
It's funny how whenever I would do my projected lineup people would question why I never put Sturm on the second line. People often claimed that he would be there ahead of Higgins. Well, you're witnessing why.
Sturm needs to just go. I was very upset when we wasted cap space signing him (in this very thread), and he's done nothing to prove me wrong. I would rather have Tanner Glass on this team than Sturm...at least Glass would hit.

Higgins can play either wing can't he? I think Hodgson and Higgins on a line with Kesler would look really good.
