No idea how to build a hockey team?? Well you don't overpay for guys who don't have knees.

We're a softer team now than the one that got physically abused by the Bruins in the SCF.

More than anything it's the cap hit. 2.25 mil is way too much for a player with two previous ACL tears

The last three seasons he has played 19,76, and 35 games.

Feels like a trade is coming. Sturm and Higgins are essentially the same player.

Not that I like this signing but he was probably the most Raymond like player out there.

Also we can go over the cap by 10% during off-season right? Still have room left for say: Gagne and Winchester?

I will say though, if he stays healthy he could easily put up 20 goals and 40 pts, which is about his average....and everyone knows that most players that come here now see at least some noticable rise in their offensive numbers. This could turn out to be like the first year Sammy was here.

Tough to determine if I like this signing or not. On the one hand, Sturm is a 7 time 20+ goal scorer, most recently in 09/10. He's responsible defensively, he's a good locker room guy, and he gives us a bit of veteran edge.

That said, I don't know that he's all that much better consistency-wise than Raymond, Higgins or Samuelsson. Seems like another streaky guy.

But really, I would rather a low-risk signing like Sturm on a 1-year deal than throwing $4.5m at a guy like Laich or Leino. I am certainly curious, however, as to what Simon Gagne will ultimately sign for.

You pay more for a 1 year deal. Who would you have signed? Leino to a ridiculous six year contract? In two years people would be cursing it. Same with Laich, Cole, Etc.

I mean bury him in the minors until someone goes on the LTIR in order to try and bring him up to replace a player. I just don't get where this is a good move. We have all these "tweener" 3rd line guys who can step up to the 2nd line in a pinch. We still don't have a legit 2nd liner who can help out Kesler. Heaven forbid Kesler gets hurt and we have to ice a Raymond/Sturm/ Samuelsson 2nd line. Terrible.

If Leino stinks you're stuck with him for 5 more years at 4.5 a year.
Yeah, at least it's only one season. He, Samuelsson, and Salo all come off the books next year and only Raymond and Schneider will need to be signed. There'll be a bunch of new cap room heading into the CBA uncertainty of 2012-13.

where are all these top 6 wingers that everyone wants that will sign for a contract that will fit under the cap. its a bit of a gamble but if he is recovered and can finish it will be a good signing and its only a one year deal

My guess is that Sturm is just a replacement for Raymond while he's out. Top 6 help is still probably on the way.

I think this is Gillis just making sure he has a backup plan incase he can't get a player from a trade/offer sheet because the its clear the UFA class is really weak this year

I don't think next years UFA market is going to be much better than this one so I'm not sure what we're looking to do here.

We didn't HAVE to make a signing right now.

Just because you don't like the deal doesn't mean you have to change facts. His last 4 seasons he has played 80, 19, 76, 35 games.

If he sucks throw him in the minors and get something at the deadline. He's probably a fill in for Raymond.

I always get a kick out of all the people who say why didn't we sign this player and that player.. you guys all know that player has to want to sign here right? Most east coast guys (Talbot for example) want to stay on the east coast.

While a risky move, it gives us flexibility next season as there certainly wasn't a lot to pick from the this fa class.

If Sturm pops 20 goals this year this thread will be gold. People do realize that players have to pass physicals to sign a contract right?

The only thing that could salvage this day is a new contract for Jannik Hansen.
