I like the signing

Vandermeer actually had more hits than Wallin and Huskins combined and in only 62 games (1/2 the games of Huskins and Wallin combined) .. but don't believe he was signed to be the #6

Jim has only managed to play between 45-60 games a year for the last 4 yrs (in his carreer has always missed between 10- 40 games a season) so unless Braun regresses VAndermeer makes a great 7th and can fill in either the 2nd or 3rd pairing

I want to reiterate the shot blocking aspect to his game. I also want to reiterate the point Mittons made about the span of the injuries. Look at how much playing time is in between those injuries. And truthfully, the span of the actual injury period is extremely short.

The dude is tough.

This is a good pickup. He's a solid 3rd pairing guy but not someone so good that guys like Braun or Moore couldn't play their way into the lineup anyway. If they had re-signed White or gotten an equivalent top four guy, it likely would have demotivated the younger guys.

It's also nice to see that he pisses off guys who park in front of the net enough to get one to fight him. Lucic is one of those big screening guys.(oh and getting a lucic/holmstrom/smyth type of player off of the ice>>>losing a 3rd pair dman for 5 mins lol)

we'll have injuries for sure, and braun and moore should be expected to fill in when burns gets hurt, or boyle, or vlassic, etc. van played 10 dmen against boston. having depth is good if you have cap space and they are cheap (and assuming your top 4 is already good). wallin at this price would have been great imo. we need at least 7 or 8 guys that won't be a 100% disaster in order to have a serious cup push.

Great signing. $1 mil is a steal for a rugged defenseman.

Even if Vandermeer doesn't work, Braun can always be called up. If he doesn't fit with the team, he'll just be let go and will cost us nothing.

The only problem I have with the deal is that it basically ends Ian White's stay in San Jose. I was hoping he'd take a pay cut and stay here at around Handzus' money, but that won't happen after this signing. White, I thought, was solid in the first two series in the playoffs.

The Burns trade probably had more to do with White leaving than this signing did.

Well, I like the Vandermeer signing and the Handzus signing. But will this leave us with enough cap space left to sign Burns since he'll probably want at least $5 million?

Burns is under contract for the coming season. By the time Burns needs to be signed, Vandermeer is off the books. As will be Nitty and probably other players too.

Nitty's contract is up next year correct? Can DW start negotiating with Burns based on the cap space we will have at the end of the 2011-2012 season? Not sure how that works.

People need to stop saying 5 mill. Wild fans said the Wild offered him 5 mill and he turned it down. With Wiz getting that deal over 5 mill, Burns is getting at least 6 and possibly 7. If these FA spending sprees are any indication, some desperate team will fork up 7-7.5 mill for Burns easy. A young All-star d-man who might compete for the Norris is rare and is going to get paid handsomely. Not to mention some Wild fans say Salcer(Burn's agent) is asking for 6.8 mill or something. DW might be able to talk that down to 6.5 but we know how bad he is at negotiations.

Yes. You just need to be under the CAP when the contract takes effect.
