Pens sign Colin McDonald (2 way | 1 yr, $525k)

http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.ht...wt-pghpenguins

Quote:
McDonald, 26, spent the 2010-11 season with the Edmonton Oilers’ top minor-league affiliate – the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League (AHL). McDonald led the AHL with 42 goals and added 16 assists for 58 points in 80 games. McDonald’s goal, assist and point totals were all career highs.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound McDonald played two games at the NHL level with Edmonton during the 2009-10 season, scoring one goal.

Big signing for WBS. Guy tore it up in the AHL last year.

No jokes. Good depth signing. This oughtta keep the baby Pens fans from getting all uppity.

Just need a top tier AHL d-man and they're set.

Never heard of him. Absolute tore it up last year (maybe a product of playing with Alexandre Giroux?). He's got good size so I'm guessing he doesn't have the speed for the NHL level.

How long til a "McDonald on Malkin's wing?" thread pops up?

All joking aside.. Definitely a nice deal - always good to have solid depth in WBS.

Good signing, top scorer in the AHL who will thrive on the WBS Penguins. Imagine him on a line with Veilleux!

He's a right winger, guys! Slap a 68 jersey on him and you're ready to go.

I had us going for Mark Mancari.

Think Chris Minard with this guy.

Looks like he wasn't actually under contract to the Oilers last year -- played on an AHL deal.

Saw McDonald in a game with EDM in 09; big body, hard worker, dominates down low, hard shot, but not a great skater #Pens

Big dude, probably one of earlier callups to the NHL if we need some size. This probably doesn't happen if Rupp doesn't leave.

Yeah, it does. This is for AHL/depth purposes only, nothing to do with any move made in relation to the parent club. Wilkes-Barre needs players too.

Wow, those are some pretty lopsided goal & assist totals.

More details from an AHL expert:

Quote:
@CVBombulie
Jonathan Bombulie
Quick scouting report: 6-3, 205. Miscast as grinder in Springfield. Signs with OKC, plays on line with Moran, Giroux, blows up for 42 goals

First thing I thought of when I saw his totals.

If it makes the Baby Pens stronger, good stuff.

It seems a little more that coincidence that we lose size from our bottom 6 and sign a very good AHL player who also so happens to be pretty big.

from the twitter quotes it doesn't sound like he's much of a grinder.

His 42 goals last year were 1 less than he scored during his 4 year collegiate career at Providence...good lord.

The 'coincidence' would be that we lost one AHL scorer in Brett Sterling and replaced him with anohter.

We signed Asham to accomodate for Rupp's departure. Not freaking Colin McDonald.
