Wow what a fantastic deal. How much worse can Gomez look... I don't think it can be any worse.

I hate these long term deals.

The nhl should have a clause where if the deal is more than 5 years, if a player retires in the remaining 5 years, the team takes the cap hit of the entire contract regardless of whether they buy them out or send them to the minors. Kind of like a 35+ rule.

It will prevent signing long-term deals until a player is 40 or 42.

Back when Gomez signed his contract, the cap was 50.3m. This year the cap is 64.3m which means if Gomez signed that contract this year, it would be 9 millions/year!

With Richards signed, other teams will make Stamkos offer sheet?

According to RDS, we decided that the asking price for Richards was too high. How is this too high? WTF!?

Toronto seems to be very quiet on the UFA front so far...

He turned down 9 years, 65M from Calgary.

There were obviously different asking prices for different teams. I wouldn't even be surprised if the price to play in Montreal was higher than that.

Because it was clear that the Rangers would match any offer. Which means that anyway to persuade Richards to play here would mean that our offer would have to be so big for the Rangers not to match.

Calgary offered more money and he still signed with the Rangers. My guess is we could have offered 9 years at 70 million and he still wouldn't have signed with the Habs. He wanted to be a Ranger and used other teams to get the contract he wanted since the Rangers would match any offer.

9 years is long, and the contract is probably front loaded (e.g.: first 4 years are like 12 M$, with decreasing salary for the last 5...I'm speculating)...cap hit is a thing (6.5M$), but actual salary is another one

Now that Richards is off the board all the idiots in TO will get the media churning out the Stamkos to Leaf offer sheet rumours. 1. Burke doesn't believe in offer sheets. 2. TB has the money to match anything the Leafs can throw at them. 3. We all saw how the last "multiple firsts" deal worked for Toronto.

Too high 'cause we do not believe in paying a guy that much.....

Seriously, too high based on what we have already. No Gomez and suddenly, it's not too high. So based on that, if the idea is that it's too high and yet, by going after him, we're admitting that we need a centerman, we have to expect to sign either Arnott and Connolly....I'm waiting....Going out for the next hour, I'm expecting a signature...

Toronto can't land Richards, so is Arnott or Connolly potentially plan B?
Yes let it be true. Please Toronto spend your money stupidly! Worst thing to do is to throw all your eggs in one basket and then settle for whatever is left.

Burke has too much pride not to acquire anyone during the FA period, he will surely overpay to get a much lesser player.

Darrren Dreger just tweeted that Calgary offered 9 years for 65 millions. And he refused so i am gussing he wanted a lot more if it was not coming from new york. Also we have to see the contract structure he could be getting 2/3 of his full contract amount in the first couple of years.

reports are that Richards took less money to play in NY for his former coach.

Toronto is quiet on the UFA so they'd be active on the DRAFT. Greatest year to suck...Burke might get some heat now, but he finally realizes that it's time to suck when you have your own draft pick.

I call BS on RDS part. IMO TO would of offered way more then what he got from NYR. I think he just wanted to sing with the rags, period.

did he mention NTC or NMC, because that makes the contract worth more in my opinion.

I'm not sure Burke can survive another non-playoff year, let alone a lottery pick year.

Let just pretend we acquire on the UFA front guys like Cole, Markov and Emelin. And just like that, we also got better.

Those 9 years make it WAY too high, not the 6.5 obviously. You really want Richards until is 40?

too bad he keeps opening his trap all the time and creating false expectations. i predict terrible year for TO, especially that they still don't have a valid center, and he'll be canned at end of the year, and new GM will take that team in somewhat a decent direction.

Never liked him and still don't. NY gets their guy like always....nothing new there. Philly tread their players like **** and still attract UFA and us classy Canadien, always get strong along to make it bigger then it really is!!

I seriously woke up this morning and didn't really give two rats about Richards.

I want Yandle.
