Nonis press conference after 6pm today??

As per Darren Millard's twitter..

daren millard: leafs agm nonis to speak after 6. Is that a sign their out of richards? Or an announcement a richards decision is on the way? Speculating.

Has anyone else heard about this? I cant find anything past Millards tweet.

Glad to hear that first quote. I know we didn't accomplish anything so far today, but I don't want to jump on the overpayment bandwagon for someone we don't really need.

Almost sounds like Nonis is the GM, I know he is speaking for Burke also but who knows how much autonony he has?

I'm sure that the management team went over their plan for today before Burke left for his trip, and Nonis was left in charge to try and carry out that plan as best as possible.

well i'm pretty sure they both agree on the things he's saying
they are vanilla quotes, nothing major

as for signings, i'm sure they all have an input but burke has the final say

On one hand it's good that the Leafs didn't specifically rush into any expensive deals that were signed today, on the other hand, it feels more and more with each passing year that the Leafs are no longer a relevant UFA destination at all given how prudent they feel they have to be, and how small market that feels. Not sure what to make of it.

with the slavery RFA and UFA terms in the NHL, you need to stock the cupboard with draft picks, and thanks to previous Leafs management, the cupboard is mighty bare for years to come.

this is a repost on what nonis has said. Mods or OP can add it into the main post:
Quote:
Nonis said interested in 10 players and talked seriously to five but "looking at contracts that to us didn't make a whole lot of sense."
Other than with few targeted players, Nonis said: "To move a player out for a player that’s not any better didn’t make any sense to us."
More Nonis: "If you’re not going to help your team long term, just to make a deal to say you made one, I have no interest in doing that.”
Nonis on Richards: "They haven’t told us anything, whether we’re in or out. They’re going to take some time and make a determination."
Nonis on keeping in touch with GM Burke in Afghanistan: "The cell service in Kandahar is better than it is in most parts of this city."

Mcguire (I believe it was) said this today during the draft special, he gave Burke kudos for working with what he had, and said "previous management has handcuffed the Toronto Organization and Burke"-was interesting to hear him come out and say that.

I agree with you. I get the feeling a lot of players don't come here because we never go out and sign players. Who was the biggest player we signed as a ufa? Mogilny or Joseph?

Cap space is still an asset, even with the increase for next year. I'm very happy we didn't overpay for marginal upgrades.

you have to figure there were some players who are turned off when it comes to playing for Wilson.

^ this. Sometimes the best move you make is the one you don't make. Initially I was hoping we might sign Leino.... but for $4.5M? Six years?
