hehe
I think Vokoun could've gotten more somewhere else, there's no doubt about that. The one year deal at $1.5 could be viewed as a subtle shot at the Panthers for signing Theodore to the exact same number. Now Vokoun takes the same deal with a far superior division rival. Vokoun wants to come back and do some damage to the Panthers it looks like...

Am i pissed? Yeah, but what can be done really. Lou is not stupid. When St.Lou tampered, he went after them, but taking on the league is a bit different. If he feels he has enough to do it, I'm sure something will be done, but until then all we can do is grit our teeth and make Gaborik groin one-liners.

Unconfirmed: Paul Holmgren, in a drunken rage, signed the escaped Baboon from NJ. Beat writers can't confirm- Baboon's agent can't find client.

- Sources now tell me that Paul Holmgren is trying to "create a player." Luuko has informed him that real-life doesn't have that feature.

Not really. The frontloadedness was not the main reason NHL rejeced it. It was the belief that Devils&Kovy didn't really think Kovy would play when he was 44. That's why they got punished, not because they frontloaded a contract. It's pretty safe to say that a healthy Richards does honestly plan to play until he's 39.

Some of you are helplessly biased.
You're missing the point. It's not a black and white issue. There's a lot of grey area.

Suppose the contract went until he was 40? Would it have been legal? What about 41? 42? 43? But 44 is definitely illegal? Before the Kovalchuk contract, where was the line drawn? At what age did it become illegal to do such a thing?

Was the original Kovy signing shady? Absolutely, but it violated no scripted rule. I'm not really that upset that it was vetoed (but I still question why the prior contracts and contract since are deemed OK) but I'm furious at the fine. We were penalized for a breaking rule that didn't exist.

Honestly? If the original Kovalchuk deal had ended at 40 years old, I am 100% certain that it would've been approved without issue. There was precedent for it's approval. However, it didn't, and instead pushed way beyond that bound.

Luongo. Butterfly goalie. Contract until 43 okay for the league.

Kovy. Power forward built like an ox. Contract until 44 resulted in huge fine.

I need some help trying to figure out what Philly is trying to do.

Philly is putting their stock into an aging but still great Pronger and Bryzgalov, meaning win-now. But at the same they traded their two best win-now forwards for futures, and then replaced them with a 3rd/4th liner and a veteran who hasn't played in the NHL in 3 years. These two players combined for basically what Jeff Carter's cap hit was.

Which is why I don't think it would've been an issue if Kovalchuk's deal ended at 40. At some point the league was going to draw a line in the sand, and 44 went beyond that line.

I sincerely wish that the league had adequately closed the loophole with the Kovalchuk Amendment, but unfortunately it looks like it will be "status quo" with these types of deals until CBA negotiations.

O man, just saw the terms on the Jovo contract. What the hell is Tallon thinking? On top of that he signs players like Bergenheim, Kopecky, and Fleischmann to 4yr deals?

They had to get to the cap floor. I don't think Florida is afraid of an over 35 contract because if Jovo retires during it that is 4.16 they don't have to spend to get to the floor.

Still missing the point.

Let's try it this way. 40 years old is acceptable in your book. Fine.

Is 41 acceptable? It's only another year. It is acceptable? Ok, 42. Is that acceptable? Ok, 43. Is that acceptable? My question is, where is the line drawn. At what age does the contract become illegal?

As mentioned before, Luongo is signed until 43 years old. Kovy at 44 is illegal though. Was the cut-off 43.5? How was Lou or Kovy supposed to know?

I'm not disagreeing that the contract was shady - it was. My question is, why were the other contracts deemed legal? The younger age at the end of the contract? Then at what point does it transcend for acceptable to 1st rounder forfeit worthy? We broke a rule that didn't exist and were substantially penalized.
