Nonis said the money or length of term on the10 players or so that they were interested in, went beyond what made sense for his club.

Trading two 1st rounders kinda ruins the whole rebuild idea

If Burkie trades our 1st rounder this year I might cry.

Well I don't think even with the current team we will be that bad. I can see us with the 7-10 pick again.

Whether this is the right 'hockey' decision or not, they shouldn't be making these kind of announcements. It just makes the Leafs look like spendthrifts. And to go into training camp standing pat? Oh brother...

It's a good strategy.

We are having a real draft next year boys!

....barring any stupid trade.

Well if the quote is accurate, they won't be signing an UFA or making a trade.

That leaves offersheets or the draft.

the only way we get a #1 center is overpaying is free angency or overpaying assests via trade...

we are not a bad enough team to get into the bottom 5 by bad play itself... and that is where the elite talent is... not the 10-15 range.. usually...

All we can really do is be patient and hope that we get our guy through the draft. Anaheim got Getzlaf without tanking, Detroit got Datsyuk, we just have to hope our scouting staff can find that gem in the draft. We wont be getting any more bottom 5 picks most likely, and nobody wants to sign here, so it's the only option we have.

Agreed.

We should be a mediocre team again, albeit there is some potential to surprise.

A traditional rebuild beginning in 2008. Starting it up in 2011 seems a bit late. I guess it will be pretty funny when the non playoff drought is a decade long.

I'm pretty sure that's a spelling mistake.

Makes much more sense to put 'will now look' to explore trades and other signings ...

Lets not get crazy folks..

The thing that bothers me now is that Burke harps about July 1st being our draft and then Nonis comes out and says no trades, no signings, nothing. Despite losing out on Richards, we definitely need to sign a 3rd or 4th line C to replace Brent if Boyce doesn't re-sign. There are still decent UFAs left.

I think they'll just hire another assistant GM to help them do nothing.

I would be more concerned with Burke going crazy in his attempt to force our way to the playoffs, traditional rebuild be damned.

Burke said he would look at a long term deal for a younger player 21 or so. Love to see Burke sign Schenn for 10 years among all this UFA chaos.

i definitely think we could be bad enough to finish in the bottom 5. lots of question marks with the lineup we currently have.
