He can fetch a 3rd round pick at the deadline. I believe Anaheim offered it up, but the deal fell through for some reason

The forwards in bold are out of position and why would you pair Karlsson with Cowen, a rookie, on the 2nd line? Cowen isn't likely going to learn too much from a player one year older then him, he would be a lot better offer with a veteran like Phillips. Also Gonchar is on the wrong side, he plays and is a lot more useful on the RD.

Da Costa although very skilled seems just too small & soft & he rarely wins a faceoff likely because he isn't strong enough. The same can be said for Regin who rarely wins a faceoff & needs to bulk up a little more.

I think Greening who was taking faceoffs for his centres during the Bingo Calder Cup run has the size, has the speed & has the strength to stand in front of the net or go into the corners for loose pucks. He may not have the skill set of the other three but he seems to have everything else. Put him with two skilled wingers & maybe they make a great line.

Regin - Spezza - Michalek - hopefully Regin & Spezza can find the magic again
Filatov - Greening - Alfredson - playmaker, speed horse & Mr. everything
Foligno - Z. Smith - Butler - Butler gives this line a legitimate scorer
Konopka - Winchester - Neil/Condra - tough line to play against

Cowen - Gonchar
Kuba - Karlsson
Phillips - Carkner/Lee - I just think that Carkner is more important to this team than Lee
- I'm guessing that Carkner & Lee will share the 6th D spot.

Anderson - Auld

Pretty sure he was mentioning the fact that OP forgot about Greening in his lineup. No way in hell should Greening be our 2C.

For all intents and purposes, this is what were most likely looking at to start the year:

Filatov-Spezza-Butler
Michalek-Zibanejad-Alfredsson
Foligno-Regin-Condra
Greening-Smith-Neil
Konopka

Cowen-Gonchar
Kuba-Karlsson
Phillips-Lee
Carkner

Anderson
Auld

Hopefully Da Costa for Zibanejad, and Cowen-Karlsson. Don't want Kuba playing with Karlsson.

I don't want Kuba playing period, but were kind of stuck with him. Zibby will only play about 9 games before being sent home and Da Costa will likely take over his spot later on. Cowen and Gonchar have already shown good chemistry together in practice/games.

I think De Costa will be in the lineup on opening night, he's played well to this point to deserve a 3rd line center spot. Just a smart player who has a nice feel for space and time.

Zibby deserves to be there but I think they'll send him to Sweden just because we have so many new players and a year in Sweden as a #1 center and WJC stud will be good for him, an extra year didn;t hurt Rundblad.

Rundblad and Cowen are there. Rundblad's passing last night was incredible. He was tape to tape Redden style through 3 zones. Both D aren't perfect but deserve to play.

Prince is super fast, he's a sweet player and lots of hustle. I was surprised by how much poise he plays with. He looks like a NHL'er to me.

Lee did good to boost his stock for a move out of here. He looked like the normal Brian Lee to me, some good plays, some passes into really bad traffic causing trunovers. If we get a 3rd for him I'm happy. Basically I see it as Lee for Filatov in that case

If Cowen and Gonchar have played well together then it's alright. I thought Cowen-Karlsson could make a good #2 shutdown pair, and they could be the #1 pair for years to come.

Im not sure if it will be tried at all during the preseason but I would love to see a

Foligno Zibanejad Michalek line to see how that works out.

My personal belief is that Spezza/Michalek dont work well at all together and Spezza is much better off with Butler, Greening, Alfie, Filatov etc

Cowen has looked great with Gonchar and vice versa. so that's 2 birds. then we had kuba and karlsson looking good together (well karlsson looked good anyway, kuba wasn't terrible). Phillips and Lee has looked great too.

If you put Cowen with Karlsson (could also work), we're left with Kuba playing with Gonchar and that imo is a weaker pairing than every other one above.

Phillips-Lee
Kuba-Karlsson
Cowen-Gonchar
and split the time as even as possible.

I agree. I just don't like to waste Karlsson with Kuba.

My thinking was that Kuba-Gonchar would play very little 5-on-5, and only against bottom lines. Since we're stuck with them, they could ''rot'' away on the third pair together til their contracts are done, and not bring their partners down with their bad defensive play.

But ya Cowen-Gonchar look good together. Maybe Kuba-Lee and Phillips-Karlsson is another option.

I dont really have access to cap geek right now, but does that line up without Kuba reach the cap floor?

Those lines are similar to what I have in mind. Ideal but unlikely.

You're underestimating Gonchar. He's looked good in pre-season so far and last year was an anomaly. I have no doubt that he will perform much better than before.
