I like the fact that they are going after some guys they like for our AHL team. I'm not upset at all that we haven't signed any of these guys that have already been picked up, Stanley Cups aren't normally won on the first 2 days of free agency. Hopefully we can pick up someone in FA and not overpay that can contribute to the Jets
the AHL front office seems to be spending time recruiting for the AHL team. I really hope a trade for a top 6 forward is in the works.
I'm using your post as an opportunity to make a few points.
The AHL front office and the NHL front office are probably across the hall from each other. Keep in mind that TNSE currently owns both teams which makes us (*) unique for now. I don't know how many other NHL teams own their own farm team, if any. I think most of the farm teams would be under contract.
Let me put a different perspective on this.
The Thrasher's farm team was the Wolves. Contrast that with the Canucks whose farm team was the Moose. Canucks did pretty good over the last few years and if you look at the Nuck roster for the recent playoffs, you'll see that most of those players were developed with the Moose system. It took time to grow these young Nuck players and I think the same thing is happening here. The difference is they are now growing Jet 2.0 players.
Would you or anybody else start building a house starting with the roof. I would think most people would start with a foundation. I've mentioned this in other threads but the Moose may be a little thin because of the Vancover players under contract to the Nucks heading off to Wolves country.
Back in the IHL days, the Wolves gave the Moose a pretty rough time and kicked us out of the playoffs several times. Not so much in the AHL days.....What happend?
I don't know what the TNSE game plan is but I suspect they are building for the future. I think they are focused on retaining selected current Thrasher players and may tweak it a little here the there. The other plan is to patch the foundation.
Performance this year? I would expect equal to or slightly better than last year. Year 1 is a learning curve (free pass). Improvement on a year by year basis after that and we may even see a few suprises.
Next years draft: Maybe not so many AHL type players. It could be a combination of more concrete in the foundation and replacing a few shingles.
* - includes Thrasher fans that want to follow this team.
whoaaa watch out for us! were coming for the cup now! glass/meech/flood were looking in good shape boys!
Have you guys even watched hockey in the Peg from 1996-2011? I have, I was a Manitoba Moose season ticket holder. You'll know that Mark Flood has been good for us if you were. Our best defenseman during the regular season. He could be a No. 6-7 guy or a St. Johns player. Anyone who knows True North, Zinger, and the rest of the staff knows they are all about the roots, building a family focused team, and building a character organization. They did that with the Moose and they are doing that with the Jets. Thus the draft pick decision they made. Flood has been a very reliable dman for the Moose. Would like to see how he does with the Jets... even for a cup of coffee.
Nobody is saying he'll get big minutes up here. I mean he didn't exactly help us in the playoffs, but during the reg season he didn't look out of place. Is a smart mobile dman who saved Nolan Baumgartner's ass many a night. Was good at picking up his assignments. Good both ways. Best offensive dman the Moose had. Smart blue collar player who likes playing in this city. Players like that are good. You need depth guys so stop getting your knickers in a knot folks. They aren't just rounding out a NHL roster here, but an AHL one as well. Expect more depth signings.
ok, this is getting embarrassing!! I hope all the players signed in the last 2 days are for our farm team!!!! Come on now, sign someone that we people outside of Winnipeg have heard off and lay off the lifetime AHLers!!!
