There's still the issue of the coach and a long history of playoff failure. I like GMGM a lot, but if they ride BB to another first or second round loss, it's time to think about other options.

His behavior this offseason suggests that Ted has given both him and BB an ultimatum

If we don't win it all this year I will be surprised if they're both back in 2012/13

it only suggests an ultimatum if you are inclined to think that both mcphee and boudreau should have been fired already. that its the only scenario where they stay.

its not in leonsis character to keep something like that to himself however.

the caps got vokoun because they were comfortable with neuvirth and holtby.

good to know there is still some good old fashioned caps hate here.

leonsis is still here. boudreau is still here. mcphee sucks. schultz and green and semin are all still here to prove how pathetic the caps are.

If gmgm trades sarge, signs alzner to a 1 yr cheap deal, then signs hannan... Then maybe there's an ultimatum. To me that would be loading up for this year vs future.

He's still got some work to do this summer, but so far, in terms of assets in and assets out, it's been a brilliant week for the Caps.

I think trading Sarge is a bad move, he's gonna bounce back this year.

mcphee has done nothing to damage the long term viability of his product. he is clearly working an agenda that shows and adjustment in his team makeup, but there is nothing about his moves that say go for broke.

Bounce back to what? A big, slow player that gets in the way?

I think peoples biggest issue with GMGM is that he's sticking with Semin, Green and BB longer than some people would like. All three of them have proven to be regular season stars and playoff flops. There is always that mindset that "this year will be different", and thus GMGMs patience with those three is simply longer than that of many of the fan base.

He's clearly built a team that can compete long term, but compete for what? A regular season championship, for sure, every year. But this product hasn't gotten a whiff of a Cup and hasn't really shown any progress towards that goal. Beating a crippled Rangers team doesn't show any real progress, when taken in light of the ass whipping the Bolts gave them.

GMGM won't sell out for one shot. He and Ted want to compete year after year, but they are competing for the wrong prize, IMO. This offseason was an incremental step in the right direction, but when half the core is still comprised of playoff no shows, the work hasn't really begun in earnest yet.

No Cup. 15 years.

I'll be his biggest fan if he changes that.

This may not be the perfect scenario for me what the Caps have done, but they are at least doing something this offseason and not giving up the farm. I'm perfectly fine giving Semin and Green a chance again, but Schultz has to go asap. I think the money was a little over spent, but compared to Wisniewski's contract, we got bargains. First priority over anything now is getting Alzner wrapped up. As far as meaning nothing if we don't win the cup, I agree, but at least I can go into this season with a better outlook. Imo, Buffalo, Boston, and maybe Pittsburgh is our obstacle in the East. Lol, I was just thinking with our luck we'll win top seed and face Florida in the first round . For the offseason, this was a big splash, expecially with trades. There is a lot of hockey to be played to see if it was a success. Not only do we get to see a more gritty team, we get to watch the Colorado scenario. I think there is work to still be done, but no big real rush now other than Alzner.

That being said, no cup ever in the franchise. I can't wait for a Stanley Cup. I hate seeing other teams fans bash this franchise, especially when most weren't born or were really young when the Caps had some good teams back then. Chicago Blackhawk fans even call us chokers and they can because they won the cup, despite they were chokers for 50 years. What has been worse for me is watching Tampa Bay and Carolina win a SC. Carolina not as much so because they were at least from Hartford and had ups and downs. Tampa was a expansion team that just makes me want to throw up. The Ducks weren't even that hurtful to watch win a cup compared to Tampa.

On paper this is arguably his best offseason of his career. He still has some significant work to do.

undying adulation? mcphee? funny. two weeks ago he was scared loser next to the brilliant and agressive paul holmgren. let it play out and the flyers look silly.

sometimes it just pays to watch and see what happens.

btw....i dont need to hear that the caps and any or everything about them sucks

I love how people are mad at McPhee for not telling them everything they were going to do this offseason, giving only vague details.

I love McPhee's secrecy and misdirection. His playoff results are what I'm not satisfied with. GMGM is a great GM except for the one thing that all hockey people are ultimately judge on, winning championships. Til he wins one, the criticism is fair.
