He hasn't played many NHL games so I am hopeful he can develop into a bottom pairing D given his young age of 25. At this point he will probably be a 1 year depth signing until Morrow/Despres can make the jump. Hopefully he can prove me wrong.

That would be a very slow defensive pairing. It would be nice to see Haley trying to crash the net with them out there though.

Ah, some of your posters confused me by referring to him as a "solid bottom-pairing" guy. Just wanted to clarify.

I like it. Get bigger on the back end with some toughness but I doubt we'll see him all that much.

This is nothing but a depth move and while it's funny Sid was busting his balls, I doubt there will be any issues.

Edit: How about dressing 7 D-man once again and have him out there in front of net. (Gill)

Insignificant, minor issues as this often lead to long-term, meaningful, and profound relationships!

We've got 7 guys on one-way contracts and it's safe to say Brian Strait is definitely ahead of him on the AHL pecking order...after that it's hard to imagine Bortuzzo isn't ahead of him too.

There's probably a time when he'll get a game or two here and there, but that's it for us. He's instantly our most experienced AHL defender, so that's something.

I'm kinda shocked he hasn't gone back overseas. I'd expect he could make more money over there...though physical defenseman isn't in high demand in most of those European leagues, definitely not in Slovakia. Maybe he just really likes living in North America.

He'll get exposed badly on the huge ice. He knows it. That's why he hasn't been invited to any National team camps. Same with his buddy Vladimír Mihálik.

And playing in the AHL/some NHL call up time is alot better than playing in the Slovak Extraliga. Both living wise and money wise.

I like the project of him as a defenseman. I think he could come in and be a pugilist right away, and really take some off of Engo's plate if we went in that direction.

Yeah... he was going to be the next Chara.

Obviously that didn't quite turn out the way the Thrashers expected.

I suppose a lot of things didn't quite turn out the way the Thrashers expected.

I dunno. I thought that was a pretty accurate description. Valabik is physical and will fight, sure. But for a player his size and with as many limitations as his game has... I've always sort of expected more, in those departments.

He's kind of far down the defensive depth chart, by my reckoning. But he's experienced enough and provides elements that this team lacks in most of it's other blueliners that he certainly isn't a bad depth option to have around.

Shero is bringing in all of Sid's punching bags. Time for #FerenceWatch?

No, you're right, we have better options as a consistent bottom pairing guy. But you also said we'd be in trouble if he's our #7 or 8, which isn't correct either. As a guy who won't be a fixture in our top six but can fill in as a spot-duty guy or when short term injuries occur, he's absolutely fine.

Now that you mention it Sid still hasn't been on the ice with Niskanen hahaha.

Don't expect Valabik to help out the big club, but hopefully he'll be useful in NHL'11/12

I could totally see this guy being unleashed vs the Islanders.
I bet you if hes suited up against them they just play a peaceful game and not do anything.

My proposition is to always have him and Engelland on the ice anytime Sid is on. Good luck to anyone that goes after Crosby now.

There's our WBS veteran D signing (though he's just 25). If this pylon plays more than 5 games for Pittsburgh we have a problem.

Hopefully we'd call up Strait, Bortuzzo and Despres before resorting to Big Boris.

O'Brien was really, really good in the playoffs for NSH. I wouldn't be surprised to see them re-sign him or for someone else to offer him big $ (i.e. more than $2million)

Same here.

I know people (understandably) get enticed by size, physicality and willingness to fight... but Valabik really is pretty bad. I would say worse than all of the guys you listed, despite his advantage in experience.

I think he's fine to have around for possible spot duty if injuries crop up and I like that he is in a different mold than the other defensemen on the team and in the system. I also hope he rips up camp and makes it clear that he's first in line for a callup. But he's an extremely limited player... particularly in a system that emphasizes skating in general and the ability to carry the puck a bit and make quick decisions to transition to offense from defense, in particular.
