The PK is going to be much worse than it was last year.

Giroux/ ??
Betts/ ??

Can Talbot kill penalties?

Talbot is one of best penaltykillers in the league, I think the last spot goes to Holmstrom.

I doubt it. That Kings sure didn't use him in that capacity. I think he had about 30 seconds total last season.

Sweet, so that fills a spot nicely.

Our PK was 15th last year, and we had two of the so called best PKers in the league.

Giroux/Holmstrom
Betts/Talbot

It's not star studded like the last several years, but I'm tired of putting so much stock into paper lineups only to be let down. It's time to let performance and execution determine who plays, not just hand all the responsibilities to Richards and Carter.

I could see Lavi trying Simmonds on the PK some. I know he hasn't played it before, but Laviolette could give him a shot.

Powerplay has some interesting possible combos

Briere-Giroux-Jagr
JvR-Pronger

So who else would have killed penalties if Richards wasn't?

Giroux and Betts with anyone of Simmonds, Nodl, Talbot, Holmstrom.
Might even try JVR.

PP lines:
JVR - Giroux - Voracek
Pronger - Timonen

Hartnell - Briere - Jagr
Carle - Meszaros

Might mix in Schenn here and there.

Special teams do not look that great...

I wonder if Schenn can be PK ready at some point during the season. That would be nice.

PK1

Talbot - Betts
Pronger - Meszaros (/Pronger - Timonen)

PK 2

Giroux - Nodl/Schenn
Timonen - Coburn (/Meszaros - Coburn)

PP 1

Hartnell - Briere - Jagr/Voracek
Pronger - Carle (/Pronger - Timonen)

PP 2

vanRiemsdyk - Giroux - Jagr/Voracek
Timonen - Meszaros (/Meszaros - Carle)

That was simple.

I wanted us to use a third forward pairing more often. We were really dogging our pk players at times. Betts and Powe both averaged more than 3 minutes a game. They ranked 1 and 3 league wide among forwards with that.

Carter-Nödl could have been a decent pairing to spare them once in a while. Especially Betts looked pretty tired and wasn't as effective as the previous season.

That would have been a good idea.

I'd be totally down for a shut down pair and a turnover pair.

I say throw Betts and Talbot against the top line or for a majority, then throw out Giroux and JVR against the second PP unit or the end half. JVR and Giroux are feisty and were literally feasting on turnovers last year, JVR especially came alive in the playoffs. They'd be more liable, but I could definitely see them not only generating offense, but striking fear into the opposing team and making them think twice about cross-ice setups for rockets that most teams love.

The PK is probably the main reason Nodl and Betts keep a job.

giroux - talbot
nodl- betts

PK:
Holmstrom-Talbot (Betts when he's in the lineup)
Giroux-Nodl

Schenn, Simmonds, and JvR see some time PKing too.

PP:
JvR-Giroux-Voracek
Pronger-Timonen

Hartnell-Briere-Jagr
Carle-Coburn

Schenn and Simmonds also see a spattering of PP time.

we saw jvr kill some penalties last year too and he looked pretty good.

I say PK is:
G and Nodl
Talbot and Betts
JVR if needed as well as Schenn (maybe not until he gets some games under his belt)
Almost all the D will PK maybe, not Pronger since he has had some injury problems recently

PP lines are really hard to predict because they have a lot of talent to be used on there but also cause lavy can be a goofball sometimes. Over the past two years I've seen Carcillo on the PP way too many times and last year Nodl got some time too. I won't even try to make lines but the forwards who definitely see consistent PP time IMO are G, JVR, Briere, Jagr, Schenn (maybe not early in the season) and voracek. If Hartnell is playing like he was in 08 i see him getting time too.

For the powerplay, I kind of see Hartnell being the odd man out and Schenn getting a shot.

I would go with JVR-Giroux-Jagr & Schenn-Briere-Voracek

I prefer two skilled powerplay units. I've seen Hartnell too many times take a dumb penalty while we're up a man to put him back out there when we have Schenn now.

You really don't want simmonds anywhere near your PK, he's simply not a good enough skater.

As for the people saying our PP looks weak. Did you not see last years star studded powerplay

PK
Nodl - Talbot
Betts - Giroux
JVR - Holmstrom (if he makes the team)

I'm fine with this with one modification: Schenn out of PK and over Hartnell on PP1.
