That's a pretty impressive hire. Looks like Hitch is a lock for New Jersey.

Great hire by the Wild organization.

He's an assistant coach with many teams (Atlanta, Chicago, Florida, Tampa Bay) but hasn't been a NHL head coach (was interim in Florida though) despite always coming up in discussion.

Meh. Torchetti could get a head coaching job next year which would make it 4 head coaches(assistants from previous coaches haven't returned either) in 4 years. Sure, he's probably a better coach than Agnew/McGill, but neither of them are serious NHL head coach options at this point. I'd like some stability down there, remains to be seen if Torchetti will last. Looking forward to his assistants, hopefully theres a potential replacement if Torchetti does get an NHL gig.

I personally don't mind if the team keeps getting NHL caliber coaches in Houston. I like the idea of our young guys getting taught by hot up and comers for the bigs.

I understand what you are saying, but the only alternative is to hire somebody who isnt good enough to catch the eye of other teams. IMO sign the best guy for the job, and if that means you have to replace him in a year or two so be it.

Got to admit that I've never heard of this guy before, but he seems to be a good choice.

Russo raves about him constantly. Anytime there's a coaching vancancy, Torchetti's name would always come up in a Russo Blog.

I think this is going to be a good choice for Houston, although I don't recall him being mentioned as one of the finalists for the Aeros job a couple weeks ago.

the only way he's going to get an NHL gig is he does a great job with Houston if he does ok he will probably have to stay longer, Yeo got the team to overachieve and showed that he could get the younger guys to take the next step which is why he got the Wild job.

As others have said, get the best guy for the job, if he can give you one year of good development for the players, that is a million times better then a guy who can't.

I wrote this about Gillies, Powe and the hiring of Torchetti...

http://www.stateofhockeynews.com/201...wild-news.html

I like the signing. He's a decent coach and has success almost wherever he's been. I think Torchetti's opportunity to be an NHL Head Coach will happen sooner rather than later. I have a pretty interesting story about Torchetti's own playing days. I'll just say this about it, its pretty unique.

At the very least he's put himself in a position where if Yeo doesn't pan out, he's got a shot to move up.
