Jeff Gorton hired as Rangers' assistant GM, Post has learned. Gorton signed Chara as FA as interim GM of B's, dealt Raycroft for Rask.
Absolutely great promotion. Gorton would be my choice as heir apparent to Sather right now. Hopefully no one steals him away with a GM job before Sather decides to pack it up.
Solid move, but where does this leave Messier.. I was under the impression that once Sather is out, Mess would step in, but this opens up other possibilities.
Cam Hope and Jim Schoenfeld are the other two assistant GMs, though they both have niches--Hockey Administration and Player Personnel, respectively. They'll probably just create a new title for Gorton.

oh didnt RB say that Cam Hope was leaving this summer?

I don't think that it changes anything one way or another with Messier's situation. Gorton will be one of three assistant GMs.

Cam Hope is actually leaving, although I doubt Gorton is simply "taking" his position, as I believe Hope was focused primarily on cap compliance.

just love the direction that the team is going in. really ever since torts was hired (not giving him credit for this), some great decisions have been made.
The popular Wolf Pack / Whale forward received the news from Ranger’s Assistant Director, Player Personnel Jeff Gorton who told Dupont that his service was appreciated and that he’d been traded. “This was the first time I’ve ever been traded so I’m a little in shock.”
On the 2nd day of the NHL draft. NHL Network had a shot of the Rangers table with Gorton at the head of the table with Messier sitting right next to him. They were looking at Gorton's laptop.
