Need to get Methot a running mate.

...then lock up RJ.

If he can even get back to where he was at the beginning of last season, I'm fine with this one.

It's certainly too much money, but with some of the recent contracts (Ericsson comes to mind) signed, I think he would have gotten far more then 3 million if this had gone to arbitration.

Did not see for myself, but reports from WC are he rebounded significantly from his late season swoon.

Not too much money in 2011. Too much money if it were 3-5 years ago of course.

Methot 3MM per year?

Really? on a 4 year deal? What happened to the hometown discount? Howson better be able to land a guy like Hannan without saying they are out of cash.

I thought 2.8 per would be his asking rate so I'm not to upset with this one. He was our best blueliner last season

Trying to figure out what part of Methot, statistically, justified far more than 3 million in arbitration. I could see a small bump, but "far more"? Far more moves into the realm of guys like Bieska and Ehrhoff. Methot doesn't have anything to fall on when being compared to those two.

My guess is Howson didn't want Methot to go to UFA after next season so he gave him a good contract to sign for several years. If I was Methot I would have rather signed a one year contract and seen what I could get over next summer. Howson probably sees Methot as an important part of the big push to 'win now.'

Here is how it is structured:

Aaron Portzline reports the deal is broken out as such: $2.25M in 2011-12; $2.75M in 2012-13; $3.25M in 2013-14; $3.75M in 2014-15. The contract also does NOT include any no-trade or no-movement clauses.

It's a fair deal. Not a GREAT deal for the CBJ, but a fair one. Glad to have Meth in the fold for another 4 years.

Second on the team in hits and third in shots blocked. Glad to have Marc locked up. He is coming into his game and will, in my opinion, earn these dollars.

I agree ... I think a lot of people are forgetting that solid stretch he had to start the season. If he can get anywhere close to that level and do it consistently, this is a solid signing.

You don't win by having a rotating door of defensemen, I'm glad we have a little bit of longevity back there with guys like Methot and Wisniewski. IMO, these guys will set precedents for the younger guys coming up, and it's great to have them both long term.

Methot's a second pairing guy, and this is a second pairing kind of contract. He'll never be any more, but if we can put a solid top pair on the ice (need to supplement Wisniewski a little there), this is exactly the kind of depth guy you want.

Not a bad dollar amount at all if you ask me.

yeah...wish we could get a guy to supplement Wiz...Tyutin/Methot sounds like a solid near shutdown pair to me...

I've long been a MM supporter - this seems like a little much dollars-wise, but he's got what you want in a shut-down type defender - good skater, decent with the puck. Yeah you'd like him to be excellent in at least one category, but now we've got four years to see if he can get there.

I don't mind the signing but a little to high for him imo. Mind you, I don't think it would make a huge difference to us if he signed for a little less. I would have had him in the same range as Oilers defensemen, Ladislav Smid. Siimilar age and similar style of game. Smid went for 2 years at 2.25/year. But like I said, had we got Methot at 2.25 from 3, not a huge deal.

I have no problem with the cost as long as we still plan on looking for a top 4 dman. If we're planning on standing pat with Methot as a top 4, yikes

Prepare to be disappointed then.

My guess is whoever we land via free agency will be a 5 or 6th defenseman with the sole intent of "holding the fort" another season until either Holden (if he is carried as the seventh) or someone on the Falcons is ready to step in.

I feel this deal is probably a year too long. He's still somewhat young and with no NTC or NMC incorporated, it shouldn't be too difficult to move him if necessary in the next few seasons though.

Holden? I'll flip around what you said... Prepare to be holding that fort together for a long while... I have no idea why we would be looking for a 5/6. We have plenty of those, including possibly Holden.
