I hope they sign Alzner soon. Then I guess will come time to deal.

It has to be Semin at this point, moving his contract is a cure-all to alievate Cap issues once Alzner is signed. And I hope/expect Alzner to get 3M+

Why would we have to trade Semin to get under the Cap? We could move Chimera and be under the limit if Poti goes LTIR and we send down Beagle and King even if Alzner gets $3m.

Moving Semin's contract is not a cure-all, because in order to replace most of the offense moving out, you have to bring a contract back, and then there's a question of whether what they're getting back is good enough to make up the difference (at this point, you're expecting Ward and Brouwer to replace Semin's offense. That's a bet I won't take). I wouldn't mind, say, Milan Michalek, but he comes with some red flags (multiple injuries, didn't break 20 goals last season) and has a $4.333 cap hit for three more seasons.

Long story long...Semin's cap hit is $6.7 million. Anyone you bring back will probably cost more than $3 million. If Alzner comes in above $3 million (for the sake of argument, let's say $3.2 million), then you need to clear roughly $5 million for him and Brouwer.

The Capitals can more easily move Chimera and Fehr for picks/prospects and not affect their current roster that much. Chimera was borderline useless last year, and Ward/Brouwer pushes him down to the fourth line. Fehr can't stay healthy long enough to be trusted with more than 15 minutes a game; Brouwer is a better version of him anyway. Combined, you would save a bit more than $4 million. Put Poti on LTIR, and you got enough room.

Speaking of Fehr/Brouwer...last off-season, the Capitals resigned Fehr to a $2.2 million contract. Brouwer, who has similar stats to Fehr, just signed one only $150,000 more. Considering the inflated market for both free agents and resignings, that's pretty damn good.

Now, get Alzner signed.

Seriously? It isn't about getting under the cap, making the team better, filling holes somewhere else or anything actually related to the Caps on the ice. It is about just getting rid of Semin for many...

Why move a guy who is going to be paid almost $1.9 mil to play 10 minutes a game on the 4th line when you can open up a giant hole offensively and move Semin?

You generally should have 1-2 million free when it comes time for the TDL.

People who think we will march into the season with 500k free are setting themselves up for disaster.

My point is moving Semin won't do that because of the amount you would have to bring back so your team's production isn't hurt too much.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the Capitals have been right up against the cap the last few seasons, as have other teams (like Vancouver). They find a way around it.

I really don't see Alzner getting 3 million per on this contract. A little more then what Luca Sbisa got is what I'm expecting. Trade Fehr or Chimera and the cap problems are solved.

True, but GMGM has also had times at the TDL where he just did no deals, especially if he believes the team is good enough or not banged up. That used to drive us all nuts.

Nice. I was expecting $2.5M, based on the chatter out of Chicago. This works for me.

Now get Alzner done and get to working the trade market.

Just not going to happen with Poti on the roster.

People assuming we are going to be accumulating space for deadline deals are setting themselves up for dissappointment IMHO.

Not too bad, I was hoping for $2.15ish. This is fine though.

Edit: I would of liked 3-4 years, not that it matters much.

This team won't have any money going into the TDL barring a massive trade. I don't see that happening, because any type of massive trade would just open up more holes.

http://twitter.com/#!/tsnscottcullen TSN's Scot Cullen says Caps are 3.3 over- I'm assuming that includes Poti but Times says Caps have 1.7 to work with if they put Poti on LTIR. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/...r-2-year-deal/

Maybe they meant including the ten percent excess allowed in the off season.

Poti is likely going to and staying on the LTIR. Last I heard- awhile ago- Fehr was scheduled to be back for training camp. I don't see the Caps making a major move now unless they get back a legit #2 center, but I don't see them forcing a move to make it happen. George will probably just do what needs to be done with the cap and wait and evaluate their play for awhile before he makes any other moves.

Yeah you don't accumulate cap space with LTIR, you are just allowed to exceed it by that amount. If the only reason the Caps are under the cap is because Poti is on LTIR, which will be the case all season, they are banking zippy cap space.

seems to me that mcphee has already announced that. didnt he say that instead of leaving a hole/s on the team to be filled at the deadline that he wanted to fill his holes now and take a complete team for the playoffs into the season? i thought he said that and said that if injuries or circumstances required adjustments that he would have that option, but that deadline deals were not part of the plan this season.

Yeah. Besides, as McPhee has shown time and time again, nobody knows what the heck he's up to or what the Caps are going to do. That's why I don't drive myself batty with "Omg we have to move Semin" or "Omg we'll have nothing at the deadline".

Especially after the wizardry he pulled at the goalie position, I won't be suprised at anything that happens.
