Wait, isn't this the exact same thing Blake Wheeler did to Phoenix?

So will the NYI receive a compensation pick?

Ya, that's what i'm thinking too. We'll sit tight and await further confirmation.

Could be, but the UND 'release' didn't mention any details about the contract, just that he signed.

I hope it's true. It would be great to see Gregoire play for his hometown team and he would be close to his Fighting Sioux buddies.

I believe that is only the case when it is a 1st round pick in which Wheeler was. Wheeler was selected 5th and therefore Phoenix was compensated with the 35th pick after he signed with Boston. Same spot Wheeler was taken, but one round later.

You are correct. Section 8. Part B of the CBA covers it, but yes, if you tender an offer to a player drafted in the first round, and he either re-enters the draft or becomes a free agent, you get a compensatory pick equal to the original pick, but one round later. So if you picked him 5th overall, in theory you get 35th. Though there is the odd chance of anoher team being given a compensatory pick or having one taken away that could upset things somewhat.

If this signing is for real, it's a good signing. Gregoire has definite potential, and was one of UND's top scorers despite playing almost 10 fewer games than the guys above him.

Also, just in case anyone was wondering, clubs get four years to reach a deal with their draft picks. If they don't sign in that time, the player becomes a UFA. Blake Wheeler was drafted in 2004, signed by the Bruins in 2008. Gregoire was drafted in 2007, and was or will be signed in 2011. I'm still not sure if it's official or not yet.

I've changed it to confirmed. Media outlets are reporting it.

THE Winnipeg Jets are about to add more local content as they are expected to reach an agreement with hometown left-winger Jason Gregoire, if they haven't already.
Known as a smart, two-way forward, Gregoire will pass up his final year of college hockey eligibility with the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux.

This is absolutely fantastic!

This is how teams become contenders without 'tanking'. You need to mine for gold, and hopefully we just struck it rich!

Kasdorf from Portage and Gregoire previously with the South Blues would show some talent can be found in MJHL.

Will Gregoire crack the lineup this year? I went to see him play this year and this kid can fill the net, I like the small moves Chevy is making!

I had the opportunity to watch Gregs play junior hockey for two season in Lincoln, NE for the Lincoln Stars (USHL), and without a doubt, he was the most talented player I've ever seen wear the jersey. And I've been around to see a LOT of Stars come through the program.

It's hard to describe his game because he's so solid in so many areas. I've described him this way in the past: He doesn't do one thing on the ice spectacular, but he's above average in just about everything. PP, PK, even-strength....he played it all here in Lincoln. I remember him scoring a SH goal while his team was down two men....deked out the whole team and went end-to-end for a goal. He's not a big guy, but he's not afraid to get his hands dirty in the corners, and will look for that open-ice check.

Great signing for the Jets, as I'm sure he'll be excited to perform in front of his hometown. I'm already looking forward to ordering a Jets "Gregoire" jersey now. You guys got a good one.

We can only hope this turns out to be a solid addition. His points are very solid, much like Blake Wheeler's.

This is not a direct comparison and by any means or any, way, shape or form a realistic indication of what type of player Gregoire could be for us, but it's fun to scan the numbers. Gregoire may turn out to be a top 6 winger for us, he may turn out to be a 3rd line winger, he may turn out to be nothing at all.

I can't believe Toews, Zajac, Oshie and Stafford all played together at UND in 05-06, what talent.

Don't get too excited about Gregoire. The Isles get a little more negative flak than they deserve at times. But if Gregoire didn't stick in NY you can probably assume there is a fairly good reason. There's late bloomers to be had, sure, but in that regard Chevy probably made his first mistake not at least qualifying Anthony Stewart. Gregoire won't be making the team out of camp in fall. My two cents anyway.

Yeah, I'd temper expectations a bit. The numbers jump off the page to be sure, but it was he third full season at UND. Some time in the AHL to adjust to the pro game will likely be necessary before we can ever expect him to contribute in the bigs. These jack of all trades, master of none types don't have a great track record of success in the NHL, but the talk of his strong defensive awareness is promising and may make all the difference.

Don't post too often but have to when I see my favorite team sign one of my boys. Beauty of a signing for the Jets! Gregs is a great kid and I fully expect to see him compete for a roster spot this season. Very sound defensivly and a solid PK'er (which for you new Thrasher/now Jets fans) is a department we were not strong in the past few years.

Yesterday on the Illegal Curve show Chevy said that they didn't want too go to arbitration with Stewart because at his salary the team cant walk away from the arbitrators decision they would have to accept what ever they awarded and Chevy didn't wanna take that route.

Exactly the type of player the Moose have developed into a solid NHLer in the past. Very excited by the shrewdness of this signing.

Realistically he won't be ready for full time NHL duty (if he develops as hoped) for at least a season, likely two imo, but he's with the perfect organization.

Welcome !!!
