Schultz, Welsh, DeKeyser, JT Brown - all would be good to great additions.

Daniel Carr is another promising young kid out of Union... a NCAA team really that has been committing resources to finding and bringing in Canadian kids to its program of late.
He is 4 years younger than Zajac and Welsh but putting up similar numbers. Has vision, as well.
Usually I give the pending NCAA UFA class a pretty resounding "meh" but this years crop is pretty solid. I dunno what it is, but we always seem to end up with the crap coming out of the college ranks as opposed to the quality prospects.
The two guys I'd really love to add are JT Brown and Matt Tennyson. Tennyson reminds me a lot of Danny Girardi. No nonsense player who keeps it simple, plays with an edge on the right side, and has a big shot from the point. Very similar build as well.
Brown, as I said before, plays very similarly to Ryan Callahan. Zero quit. Always has his feet moving. Great speed and plays with a chip on his shoulder. He's not quite as good defensively, but he has a great shot off the wing. Very well spoken kid too.

Western Michigan sophomore D Danny DeKeyser, arguably top U.S. college free agent, has decided to return to school next season.

Darn. Tennyson to the Sharks, good pick up by them.
Off the board:
DeKeyser (WMich) - Staying
Tennyson (WMich) - SJS
Abbott (Maine) - TOR
Still TBD:
Schultz (Wisco) - Rumored to NYR, TOR, VAN
JT Brown (UMD) - Rumored to PHI, BOS, TB
Lamb (UMD) - Rumored to BOS
Welsh (Union) - ???
Schmidt (Minny) - ???, likely stays

Brown off the board, TBL got him.
Picked up Hunwick AND Brown today in my keeper, successful day I'd say
Brown to TB official. Wonder if it is a lack of scouting / knowledge or if these teams are guarenteeing playing time - which we obviously can't do.
I think it's just lack of desire. I don't think Sather puts a lot of stock into the NCAA game. When the Rangers are picking up people it's guys like Moses, and Grant instead of the ones who might actually make a difference on an NHL roster one day.
Shouldn't be hard to entice NCAA guys to come play for the Rangers, and nothing wrong with adding organizational depth for free.
But it could definitely be lack of guaranteed playing time as you've hinted. 49 SPCs Sather isn't going to blow that last spot on anyone but Kreider.

Well the Rangers did add Gilroy, who was considered one, if not the best college UFA that year.
Not to mention the contract they sign could take effect next season even if theu sign now, a la Yogan. So it could be the immediate NHL playing time thing.

Sign a couple of them for next season - like they did with Yogan. Lots of horrible projects that will be out of a contract within the organisation next year. Avery (not so horrible but parting time is here), Baldwin, Talbot, Bouchard, Valentenko ?, Thuresson ?, Klassen, Bell ?, Vernace, Newbury?, Chappell in the minors + Scott, Fedotenko, Eminger Woywitka presumably gone from NYR squad: that is like 11-15 names probably gone. At least.
To sign = Kreider, Fasth, Lindberg plus new picks, prospects Free Agents, pickups
All I can think of is that these kids want to play in the NHL today, and aren't willing to let their deals slide to next year. Lightning say they expect JT Brown to play this week. He could step into the NHL with his speed and tenacity. Tennyson has NHL size and strength, but needs some polish.
Would have been nice to get them in Hartford, but oh well. Hopefully we land the big fish in Justin Schultz.

Exactly, the immediate playing time. With the big fish the Rangers are usually at least rumored (see: Schultz, Gilroy) but those are the obvious names. How come we're not bringing in guys like Conacher (last season), Brown, Tennyson, Hunwick, etc... when as BBKers said...

We've got a lot of dead weight leaving the system this off-season. Would be an asset free way to add some bodies to Hartford and possibly strike gold.
Does Morgan Reilly play on a pair with McIlrath? Would be nice to trade up and get him, IMO he's the best d-man in the draft not named Murray or Dumba.
JT Brown wanted to play in the NHL this season. TB agreed. The Flyers balked at the request. He loses 1 year off the ELC.
Quote:
Turns out, the country club-bound Lightning could offer something the Flyers could not: a chance to join the NHL lineup immediately. Brown is expected to play for Tampa Bay against Winnipeg on Saturday night. By playing in the final games of this season, Brown will already burn one year off his two-year deal, allowing him to become a free agent after next season. That was another incentive.
“Definitely exciting,” Brown told the Tampa Bay Times. “It came down to having the right opportunity and the right fit.”
Jeremy Welsh is 24 years old. He will sign a 1 year ELC if he leaves school. If he waits until after his senior year,Welsh is 25 and not subject to the entry level system. He can sign a 2 year deal for one way money. That's assuming the system remains the same in the next CBA. The CBA uses a September 15 date to determine the age of the player. Welsh doesn't turn 24 until 4/30 but he will 24 on 9/15 so he signs a 1 year ELC.
