#Canucks announce they've traded rights to Sergei Shirokov to Fla for rights to Mike Duco. Shirokov had been planning to play in KHL
Good depth for the agitating forechecker department, decent 4th liner and or callup for a checker.
Quote:
ASSETS: Plays with loads of energy when on the ice. Can play both wing and center. Is aggressive and feisty, but can also score at lower levels.
FLAWS: Doesn't have ideal NHL size, so his aggressive style may not be as effective against the NHL's biggest and strongest players.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Agitating energy forward.
Should put on 5lbs of muscle to go up to 205lbs.
I think he has put some dues in 194 games played in the AHL, and had 12 games of NHL experience with Florida recently, plus being 24, could be a late bloomer to become a decent NHL forechecker/agitator that we are seriously lacking after Torres left.
Should re-sign at a good contract as well, another 2-3 year, two way contract?
Sounds like a pest and another forward position gone for our prospects at the Wolves.

“I’m a big fan,” DeBoer said of Duco. “He does bring energy. When he’s on the ice, he’s skating, he's running around and he's chirping at people. He’s involved in the play. I don’t think we've gotten that from our depth players lately.''
DeBoer compared Duco to Rangers pest Sean Avery, saying that if Duco had a few more inches on him, he wouldn't be relegated to bubble status. “He'd be making millions,'' DeBoer said of the 5-foot-10 winger.
This guy has a lot of penalty minutes for a 5'10 dude. I'll miss Shirokov, but he didn't fit here .
Ah such is the life of having too much depth, now we know how Detroit feels, its hard to bring in decent depth for youngsters, only premium prospects will ever get a chance to shine here now.
But its a small price to pay, IF we get that elusive Stanley Cup FINALLY!!
I wonder how many good prospects will flounder with AV at the helm of this team? Only guys who are first and foremost grinders ever get a shot at the lineup. Many fail (Bolduc, Glass, Rypien, Volpatti) and a few with some talent will succeed (Burrows, Kesler, Hansen). Guys like Grabner, Hodgson, Shroeder and Shirokov who have tons of skill but need to learn the gritty game will just get tossed aside to succeed elsewhere.
Seems kinda like Rypien but smaller and much worse fighter. I guess something like this was needed since players like Glass, Rypien and Desbiens have left the organisation this summer.
Turn an AHL all-star and potential top-6 skilled forward and the leading scorer of our farm team into...a very small cheapshot artist/goon with lots of 'grit' and 'energy'.

If you can't play a two way game then you can't play on a good team in the NHL. Skilled players like the twins and Ehrhoff provide little to no grit have done extremely well under AV. He demands they play adequate defence as he should.

Rypien was too small to make an impact other than fighting. This guy is short but stocky. Guys like Tootoo make a living running around, this guy could do the same. All the better if he's a decent player.

lol.
Shirokov signed a 3 year deal in the KHL and wasn't coming back to North America.... get something from nothing sounds pretty good to me.
Well at least the team got something for a player who wasn't going to make the team. I mean really though, Shirokov's 25 and wasn't even close to a PPG in the AHL. He might have a shot with the Panthers, but I'm not holding my breath.
