but the author made note of navigation during the era, and it was based on a Spherical earth.....which was my original point that you questioned.

What are you studying?

Military/naval history.

And I think the author is full of it as related to navigating a war galley. They literally hugged the coastline, and had to stop frequently to take on water. You tell me, if you are constantly operating off of landmarks, what does the shape of the earth matter? Here's a wiki link with the basics.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galley#..._Mediterranean

We are talking very rudimentary stuff. Celestial navigation existed, but didn't so much rest on a spherical earth as basic knowledge of reference stars. As long as a sailor knew where he was, he could simply eye ball it... Which was the case for a long long time.

As said, though, I have doubts that you are accurately summarizing his argument.

Intresting degree. Clearly this is your field. So I see where you are coming from, but maybe you should pick up the book for your collection, and get back to me. Wouldnt hurt to read it.

There's a dark clouding Hovering over this place for sure. It's a Crafty cloud, too.

Also, RB did you ever recover from that Charlie horse that one Girl gave you?

Your ability to roll off an argument without taking any of it into account is stunning.

This was never an argument. I simply stated a fact, that i had read in a book that These coordinated counter attacks were planned with the idea of a spherical earth in mind.

Well when I came back to this thread I tell you what, I wasn't expecting to see a discussion on ancient naval war tactics.

Has anyone touched on the phalanx yet? Or possibly the advantage of the katana over the previous straight swords Japanese warriors had used, and how that altered warfare in Japan? Haha

It can be arranged. What kind of phalanx do you want? Hoplite, Macedonian, or Shield/Spear wall?

We probably should try to get back on topic...whatever it is that was.

I remember discussing things like my major (comp sci and investments) with you along with other random not really "pick up/hop in and chat" subjects like typography, economics, statistical mathematics, and other things. Had you penned as an early 20s kid who is taking some courses here and there in various subjects. Guess you just have a lots of areas of interest/hobbies and read a lot though!

Never. If I get so much as flicked anymore I yell out "Ow!" in some ambiguous eastern European accent, so it sounds like "VAL!" Who knew a Charlie horse from a Girl could cause so much trouble? Women, man.

I think this whole thread should just be merged into the OT thread.... Or maybe this thread has already grown too powerful? Should the OT thread be merged into this one?

If you catch that Girl who gave you a Charlie horse, you should either Craft her a cage or send her straight to Val-halla. Can't have A GRown-Up Devil going Around with that Zeal.
