Hamrlik was here, not at his best, but still good enough. Boris Mironov was having his career years. Yet with all that talent, we were still fighting for those last playoff spots. We never once got anywhere close to a top 4 conference finish or the dominating regular season level the 'Nucks are playing with these days.

I'm thinking back in those days the top end talent was good enough but the supporting cast was more than lacking. Now, we have a great supporting cast, but almost no top end talent. Everything balances out.
And this is exactly the reason why I wouldn't want to give up 3 or 4 regulars for a guy like Thornton...

been there, done that...

People who whine too much deserve to be in Dallas and Phoenix. They are detimental to the team's success. That's why I left Comrie and Arnott off the list.

Not sure why some here don't think Guerin plays good right now. I believe he was the only player last year to score 30+ goals and 100+ PIM's in the same year. Every time I saw him in Dallas, he was their best player on the ice after Turco.

My list:

#1 - Bill Guerin
#2 - Roman Hamrlik
#3 - Janne Niinimaa
#4 - Greg DeVries
#5 - Doug Weight
#6 - Miro Satan

Something like that.

commenting on the whole top end talent vs. supporting talent argument..... when we had 3-4 guys that were really at the top of their game (weight, cujo, niinima and guerin) we made it to the 2nd round a couple times.... .now with a much better supporting cast on the 2nd-4th lines we dont make the playoffs (or barely sneak in only to be killed in the first round)..... its a interesting dilemma as to which model you choose

personally i think you go with the "supporting cast" team..... a team that relys on 3-4 players to carry them is too vulnerable to a "shut down" line, scoring slumps (although really good players dont have them often) or injuries.....the big problem (of course) with a team of supporting type players, is that you dont have that game-breaker that will get you a goal when you need it more often than not (which is just the problem the oilers have currently)..... the thing is that edmonton cant afford any really high end talent unless they **** their 3rd and 4th lines in order to pay the high end talent.... so at the end of the day we're left with one or the other, and neither is really a model to win anything significant

This guy is not my favourite of all who left (Niinimaa and Weight are those) but the one guy I would want back above all others is Satan. The reason is that we have had absolutely nothing to show for him. With Weight (Stoll, JDD, Reasoner) Niinimaa (Torres, Im not mentioning the other one), Guerin (Dvorak, in a way Hemsky but I think Oilers would have a good shot at Hemmer at 19 anyway who was a slight reach and a great one at 13), and many others we have something to show for them, but we dont for Satan which is why that is the one I would want back.

As mentioned in another couple of threads, we ended up getting Comrie out of the draft pick we got from Craig Millar. If you count Stoll and JDD for Weight, then you've got to count that.

I stand corrected then. I actually wasnt aware that we got Comrie out of that pick. With that said though, without moving Weight and then Hecht specifically for those two picks we surely would not have had both, and likely neither, of Stoll and JDD. Without the Craig Millar pick we may have still had Comrie. Although I do acknowledge it is very doubtful he would have slipped from 91st to 139th when the Oilers picked next. but ya never know with the way later rounds fold out, especially for small skilled guys.

Its funny how the draft pick throw in works out sometimes. I was looking at the Salo deal a few months ago (after he was traded), and was really surprised that the 8th round pick we sent over with Mats Lindgren turned out to be Radek Martinek. Not that he's gonna be a top pairing dman anytime soon, but certainly amounted to more than you'd expect out of an 8th rounder.

Other times, a first or second rounder amounts to absolutely nothing and a seemingly fair deal goes bust. Its been said before, but if you're going to make those deals its more about faith in your scouting staff than anything.

I always thought that Satan belonged in Edmonton. Was he a FA loss? Was he a fan favorite?

I believe he was traded for 2 minor league defensemen. 1 of them might have been Craig Miller. Don't think Satan was used properly here(put on the 3rd line)

Two guys I would like to see back in Oiler silks

1)Mike Grier - I think the oilers really miss this guy. Played a physical game and could score 20 goals a year. I remember the year the Oilers beat Colorado in the playoffs, Mike Grier put Forsberg in his back pocket. Short-handed the oilers haven't been the same since he left.

2)Boris Mironov - he is a lot like Ulanov in that he was an Awesome Oiler, but not much success anywhere else. Played physical and was a great pp man. I would like to see Klowe get him back (for the right price of course).

4)Janne Niinimaa

5)Sievey Salo - For you Matts... :lol

6)Mike Comrie

Well obviously Peter Ing will be at the top of everyone's list...so aside from him who do you guys want back?
From that list:
Nedved
Niinimaa
Guerin
Arnott
Comrie
Salo

Ex Oilers I'd like to have for next season if salary wan't an issue:
Weight
Joseph
Maltby
Niinmaa
Guerin
Nedved
Satan
Hamrlik

I wouldn't mind being able to ice this lineup:

Smyth - Weight - Guerin
Satan - Nedved - Dvorak
Moreau - Maltby - York
Torres - Reasoner - Pisani

Niinimaa - Brewer
Smith - Hamrlik
Ulanov - Staios

Joseph
Conklin
