Its not because the guy has become one of the slowest skaters in the league, that he just cant play with his teammates, that he is lazzy and that he just cant play inside of a structured system that you should say a such thing..

If our 3rd line wasn't set, I'd offer him a mil/1 yr.
Ground rules: 3rd line minutes. 10 seconds of PP. Drama = waived. Don't like it? Buzz off!

First of all, I dont see why we would have to get rid of Kostitsyn.

But the point is that even if their respective salaries is off the books, you still have to find some good players to replace them, and they're not going to play for free.

A 2nd line winger like Kostitsyn, thats 3.5M, at the very least.
A solid 3rd line player, able to play nicely on the PK, 1.5M is very fair.
A top-4 D, you'll need 4M, at least...

Its better to play it safe in the current economic climate, not to mention the CBA situation.

First off all, I'm a fan of AK and would love to keep him.
Second I guess you're trying to tell me that a guy like White can't replace Moen or that Spacek isn't easily replaced by Yemelin Weber or even (A stretch) Diaz?

Gill is not a top four D-man anywhere else in the league except for Montreal and he will not be resigned next year unless he comes back at 1 million.

Montreal has more then enough money as it stands today and next year to sign Gorges Price Yemelin and Subban to contracts.

Spacek Moen and Gill to a lesser extent are replaceable parts.

I'll bet anyone that AK will play himself off the team BEFORE or AT the trade deadline, he is not much better than Kovy, all the talent with low motivation.

We're on the same page regarding Kostitsyn, but what i meant is that if everything is going nicely, our youngsters will replace these vets but they will be paid accordingly to their new status.
Of course or vets are replaceable. But they will be replaced with players that are going to be paid as much as they do.

With our current young players, we dont really benefit from a "free" year. Pacioretty and Eller might give us some, though.

(And thats if they progress as they should, keeping us out from looking for a vet.)

You get rid of Spacek at 3.8 ? Well Subban is going to have a similar cap hit, at least.
White takes a good part of Moen's cap hit (slightly lower, i think, though), Yemelin takes Gill's...and then you still need some to replace White, Yemelin and Subban on the roster.
They move on to replace Moen, Gill and Spacek, but they cant have both roles, obviously.

These guys are not going to be expensive, but still, thats 0.7 there, an another 0.6 here etc...

We currently have 8M in cap space, at least 2.75 for Gorges, at least a raise of 2.5M for Price, there is not much left if you want to have a margin for attracting a big contract via a trade or probably make a push for Suter or Burns next season.

I don't understand why some of you would want an over-the-hill veteran over a very feisty, reliable White. I think it's time we give the guy a full time job in the NHL. I like our roster the way it is. I REALLY don't want a Kovalev or a Bernier pushing guys like Moen down the chart. I'm way happier with Moen, even if he has stone hands, playing on the third line. The only time Kovalev played motivated for us is when he was the go-to guy. That's the kind of position he excels at. We cannot offer him that. Let the go of the guy.

And I think that the combination of Markov-Subban-Gorges is a solid top-3. Then you have Weber and Emelin looking for a chance to round-out that top 4, and Gill/Spacek to fill out the third pairing. That's a solid defense, in my opinion. It's time to give the young guys a chance. Even if they end up screwing up once in a while, that's how they're going to learn.

I like this roster. It's not the best, but I see no options out there in the UFA market that are really enticing to me or that could really make us better. Maybe a Mara, or a Sopel as an extra Dman, as many of you have mentioned. But not at the cost of our actual players' icetime.

You say that every year, yet he's still here. This is the most important season of his career so if he doesn't show up to play every night, it will affect his next contract in his first eligible year of FA but if he plays at a very high level he could cash in the big bucks at the end of this season. I'm sure him and his agent are well aware of that.

I can't wait to see who he starts the year with but as long as it's not Gomez, he should be fine. See: last season.

I am of the opinion that we keep our cap space and go into training camp as is and see where all our youngsters are at. We have lots of forwards to look at in our system.

After pre season we will have a better idea of where the holes are and if needed we can make a trade or sign someone with some of the cap space.

Then by christmas or trade deadline we can fill any missing pieces via trade as we will have cap space to add a player of value.

With Markov and Gorges and Max Pac, we are a better team.
P.K will be better, he will not suffer from the second year let down. He is a stud.

I think DD is underrated still and will really take off this season with the ever growing confidence in him the team has.

Goats offered Hamrlik a deal cause he was a good D. It was a low ball offer, doesn't mean he is after a D with a price tag of 3 mil or over. I see a guy like Mara after pre season if his services are deemed required.

Yemelin may tank we can't know for sure. I doubt he does but it may become a hole, 6th D that is.

[QUOTE=HockeyF3ind;34899681]Assuming we sign Gorges and White, I think we should round out our bottom 6 with some more offense.

I'd sign Kovy for 1 yr, to play RW on the 3rd line.
Then sign Bernier to make the 4th a real scoring line.

Hey Buntster!

don't quote something on your first post, without saying anything your self?

about that roster and cap space. The team as is will play well and have lots of cap space, assets to fill any hole that develops or doesn't get filled in the allotted time.(first 20 games).

Not sure anyone available UFA would fit(room/ice/term/salary,etc) at this point without using up a significant amount of the cap space. We have depth in our organization, lets dangle the carrot huh?

3 of our top 6 defenders are Gill, Weber and Yemelin! Why the hell would we sign a worthless kovafloat before going after a solid top 4 like Hannan? You want to see Markov get injured again and our d-corps has Subban and Gorges playing 25minutes a night followed up by Gill and Yemelin?

I guess you guys are itching to miss the playoffs.

Here`s what I would like to see....................................
1) Trade Mtl: Lecavalier and picks Tampa: Spacek, Trotter, Darche and Dumpont.
2) Trade Mtl: P. Cormier Wini: Gomez or deal Gomez to Phoenix or Islander`s.
3) Trade Mtl: R. Suter Nash: Kostitsyn and Weber.
4) Sign Godard if he can play with the Pen`s he can play with the Habs.
5) Sign Artyukhin as fourth line LW and he as enough skill to play 3rd line if needed.
6) Sign Hannan at around $2.5 per for 2 year`s.
7) Trade Mtl: Brown and pick LA: Gorges and Moen
8) Trade Mtl: Clarkson Devils: White
Cammalleri Lecavalier Cole (A number 1 line finally)
Pacioretty Plekanec Gionta ( Excellent second line)
Clarkson Eller Brown ( An awesome 3rd line that can score and work there butts off) Artyukhin Cormier Godard (A very tough line to play against)
Suter Subban ( Excellent pairing)
Markov Emelin (Markov will bring out the best in Emelin, he is a gamer)
Hannan Gill ( Good shut down guys with size)
Diaz, Nash, Carle (All capable of filling in for a few games when needed)
Price (Best young goalie in league if not tyhe best overall goalie)
Budaj (Solid back up for 15 to 18 games)

It remains to be seen, but to me signing Cole is an indication that Kostitsin window of opportunity is closing with the Habs. We have 3 big longterm contracts for top 6 wingers and Pacioretty is propably taking away that final spot.

So if he either underperforms he becomes expendable or overperforms and becomes too expensive when we are already loaded with big forward contracts.

I'm pretty happy with the way the roster is set - just bring in Winny for your extra 4th line energy (what if White gets injured or suspended right?) And get Morrison to centre the 4th or even 3rd line until Eller is back - then you'd be free to put DD on the wing like everyone seems to want and not have Ryan White taking faceoffs lol - you'd be surprised how underrated Morrison is and how cheap we could get him - very similar style game to Halpern but with better passing IMO.

The real question is the D pairings - who is going to play with Markov?
