You think he has the fire? I wish he showed it a bit more, maybe a bit more cockyness.
He earn a ton of respect from me when he skated out of the crease and got in the forwards face who cheap shot one of our Dmen. I forget who on who that was.

I believe that was when Doughty got speared and Quick came to his defense.
It's a nice problem to have, and I am glad the Kings have it.
I don't think Dean moves Quick anytime soon. He would have to get his socks knocked off in a deal to move Bernier. I am pretty sure that the Avs inquired about Bernier prior to making their deal for Varlamov. Most "experts" consider Bernier's ceiling to be much higher than Varlamov's ceiling. Considering what Colorado gave up to get Varlamov gives you an idea about how much Lombardi values Bernier.
On second thought... I think in 2 years, if both goalies prove to be solid and it's a coin flip at that time, I say this is how Lombardi decides who to keep:
Lombardi: Okay boys, we're here today to decide who will resume their career with the Kings, and who will live out their dream in another city.
Quick: Can you feel my mind control working, Dean?
Lombardi: What are you talking about?
Quick: Damn, nevermind.
Lombardi: Anyway, I promised Bernier a chance to become a starter next season, and it's obvious it can't be done with both of you on the same team.
Bernier: I started a game for the Kings before he ever did! I should get the job, not the bloody American! They always come after the party has started and claim everything for their own! They did this with the Indians centuries ago! Let's not let them win again, Dean!
Lombardi: I'm from Boston, Bernie...
Bernier: Oy vey! So sorrie, Deano! Please continue!
Quick: Damn crybaby Frenchie!
Bernier: Suck on this, baby face!
Lombardi: Guys! GUYS!
Quick & Bernier: Sorry Dean.
Lombardi: Okay as I was saying.. you both have that crown tattooed on your ass. It's evident that you are both premier goalies who will one day rewrite the record books. I wish I could keep you both, but the time has come to make a decision. Now, instead of me making the decision, I'm going to let you two decide right now. In this envelope, you will have an 8 year contract with an AAV of $3.25 million to resume your career as an LA Kings. Now I know this may not seem like a lot, but I'm trying to fit everyone under the cap here, and we want to start the beginning of a dynasty in LA by winning Cup after Cup.
Quick: Damn it. If that fatass in front of me wearing #8 wasn't such a greedy ***** trying to pay off all those Diet Coke expenses a few years back, we'd at least be talking about a $5.5 million salary right now.
Bernier: With this damn country's inflation rate skyrocketing, that wouldn't even fetch us a 2 bedroom house in the 909!
Lombardi: Guys, work with me here. It's not easy for me either. Ever since we introduced that horrid home plate logo on both home and away jerseys, merchandise revenue dropped by over 75%. The only way for us to make money is by building a great team and getting deep in the playoffs. I gotta keep all my stars under the cap here.
Quick: What's in the other envelope?
Lombardi: I'm glad you asked. In this other envelope is a trade submission form ready to send over to the NHL offices in New York. It's a trade to another team for some of their best prospects along with numerous 1st round draft picks for the next few years. This team has a storied history and has had some of the best players to ever play in the NHL play for their franchise. They are desperate for a starting goalie and have promised to sign one of you to a contract worth over $7.5 million a year for 10 years.
:::Bernier & Quick both look at each other as they scramble for the second envelope. They both end up ripping up pieces of the letter as they fight over it. They then start to frantically piece the letter together to salvage it. All of a sudden, they piece together the city and name of the team they could be getting traded to. They both look at each other and pause, and then immediately launch themselves towards the first letter and take pens out of their pockets to sign it immediately.
Then out of no where, Ryan Smyth walks in the room and goes, "Hey guys! So did ya’all decide who's coming back with me to the great city of Edmonton?!"
Quick & Bernier both look at each other, scream at the top of their lungs while they grab the 1st letter and run out of Dean's office with Smyth standing there arms open with both thumbs up:::

I want Patrick Roy kinda smug confidence, as a fan i hated that guy, but I want other people to feel that when Quick plays
Both are signed for 2 more years at just over 3M combined, fully expect to keep both through next season at the minimum. I would like to see Bernier get close to 30 games this year, the Kings need to see what they have in Bernier before making a decision. Quick has played great the last 2 years so it is his job to lose, his won/loss record in the playoffs is more about team play than Quick not stepping up.
^^^ all this. Bernier needs to start 25 - 30 games so we can see what he's got. Quick should realize this, so starting fewer games is in the better interest of the team, and he just look at it as another competition.
Hopefully, Bernier will make it a tough choice for DL to decide which goalie to keep as the #1.
I like Quick, I think he is mentally tougher from what I've seen. And I love that he stands up for his teammates and has that fire. BUT...I'll go with whichever gets us to that cup. I think DL will hold on for as long as he can till he has to make a decision. Wouldn't even surprise me if the team starts doing real well and both sign 1-2 year extensions.
As far as the bold is concerned, no way is Bernier going to sign another 1-2 year extension to be backup. He needs to start his career as a number one, whether that's in LA or somewhere else.

No, he needs to EARN a #1 spot. He hasn't come close to doing that yet.
Just cuz he's Bernier doesn't mean he's a #1.
If he gets plenty of starts this year, we all can see what he's got to offer.

Just like Quick "earned" his spot right? There was never any competition for the job when it came to Quick. They name him number one goalie before camp starts. When camp is wide open, Bernie wins the job. He did it at 18 for cripes sake.
Quick is a solid goalie, not exactly elite and hasn't made that step to the next level. I wish quick was able to step up in the playoffs and show the everyone he can carry the team.

And there wasn't much to compete against then, either. He's had competition each year since then, and that competition has been Quick.

Uh, not that I don't think Bernier will be a great goalie in the NHL, but there was a competition between Quick and Bernier. It happened in Manchester and Quick won it. That was the reason he got the call up and the opportunity to compete for the #1 job, which he won quite easily over LOLbarbera.

Because he had a strong finish to the 08-09 season. Had he sucked in that time things maybe different. But to say he didn't earn the job is just stupid.

I'm not saying he's earned it, but if Murray continues to only play him once in a blue moon, there is no way he's going to re-sign an extension to be a backup. I just don't see it. He's never been given the opportunity to earn the spot. I'm not saying Quick doesn't deserve it right now. I actually love quick as well, but every time Bernier got on a roll last season, he went back to riding the bench, especially late in the season when he was playing better than Quick.
Since Quick will be a UFA after his deal expires, I expect DL to make decision after this coming season. Could be able to use 1 really cheap year as a nice bargaining chip.
IMHO, the bargaining chip in Lombardi's corner regarding Quick's contract is Bernier. I.e., Bernier's around to ensure that Quick won't get ridiculous Ryan Miller money. Once Quick signs a "reasonable" long-term deal (not more than $4.25m per for not less than 5-6 years), then Bernier is gone. But where?

That's where! Look to New Jersey. Bernier might be the perfect player to include in a package for Parise. Maybe Penner, Bernier, & Hickey for Parise? Time will tell......

Won't the Flyers be needing another goalie by then?

As much as i'd love to keep Quick at that price, it's gonna be tough if he has another 35+ win, .915+ SV% and sub 2.25 GAA season to keep him under $5.5-6. Unless it's a Luongo type-deal. I don't see JB having much barring on the negotiation as Quick would have over 130 wins and Bernier probably won't have half that many starts.

I recall Quick getting the call up to the big club because he paid his dues (33 AHL games) and age. i believe the plan was to not rush Bernier. since then it hasnt really be a competition. Terry Murray rides one goalie because he doesnt want the team to lose faith in him.
I'd like to see Bernier get more games in (around 30) but realistically thats only gonna happen if Quick gets injured.
We have both for 2 more years, I don't care who starts we have to legitimate number ones. Let's cross that bridge when we get there in two years cause dean aint gonna move either, and I couldn't be happier.
