Official press release:

Quote:
RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with center Brandon Sutter on a three-year contract. The deal will pay Sutter $1.5 million in 2011-12, $2 million in 2012-13 and $2.7 million in 2013-14.

“Brandon is one of the cornerstones of our franchise moving forward,” Rutherford said. “He is an extremely intelligent player who can perform in all situations, and has already grown into a leadership position for the Hurricanes at a very young age.”

Sutter, 22, established career highs in games played (82), penalty minutes (25) and plus/minus rating (+13) in 2011-12, his third NHL season with the Hurricanes. Born in Huntington, NY, but raised in Red Deer, Alb., he totaled 14 goals and 15 assists (29 points) and led all Carolina forwards in shorthanded ice time (2:21 per game). Sutter (6’3”, 183 lbs.) also led all Carolina forwards and ranked tied for seventh among NHL forwards in blocked shots (73), and was first on the team in plus/minus (+13). He skated in his 200th NHL game on April 2 against the New York Islanders, and the Hurricanes were 11-0-1 when he scored a goal during the 2010-11 season.

Carolina’s first-round selection (11th overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Sutter has totaled 36 goals, 39 assists (75 points) and 43 penalty minutes in 204 career NHL games with the Hurricanes. He has represented Canada in a number of international competitions, including the 2007 Under-18 World Junior Championship and the 2007 Canada-Russia Super Series, and won a gold medal with Canada at the 2008 World Junior Championship. Prior to turning professional, Sutter completed a four-year junior hockey career with Red Deer of the Western Hockey League (WHL), totaling 68 goals and 86 assists (154 points) in 205 games

Great deal for a very good defensive 3rd line C. The kid will continue to grow and will be 25 for a payday contract if he continues to get better

Is he really worth this much? Seems like an overpayment.

Not to me. As a STH, watching him play game after game, you appreciate all the things he does well and how smart of a player he is. As a 21 year old, he put up 21 goals (and only 2 minor penalty minutes) in 72 games after being called up. Last year, he was asked to play a more defensive role and did extremely well in that role. Was a team high +13 and was used in every situation.

He is still developing and has a ways to go, but I really feel that in 3 years, Canes fans will be saying what a bargain he is even at $2.7M.

He's worth it and then some. He played the role he was asked to play last year at a high level every night. Rumor was the reason this took so long was the Canes wanted to lock him up for even longer (6 yrs) but he only wanted to do 3.

Definitely worth it for his defensive game alone. On a team that had a poor goal margin he was +10 or better almost all season.

Awesome, I still remember the 07 draft and the Hurricanes being "all over Sutter." - (Arguably) Smartest kid in that draft and a real heart and soul player. There's nothing wrong with picking that type of player, especially in a weaker draft and hopefully, he'll be a Cane for a long time. He's a great 2 way player and it's a good deal.

Good contract for everyone involved. If Sutter's offensive game picks up this will look like a huge bargain, but even if it doesn't it's a good deal for Carolina.

I think he tops out as a 55-60 point guy (so shot at 25) but with the way he plays that'll get him a few Selke noms over the years.
