The answer will be no but I would make a big offer to Selanne. I would give anything he wants. If he wants a coaching job when he retires, a NMC, a multi year deal, anything. Won't hurt to try. Work your magic Howson, send the entire team to Selanne if you have to.

Then I came back to reality and my dreams were shattered.

Sorry if I'm a bit pissed, but I can call him a moron all I want. The guy should probably have been taking it a bit slower after a hip surgery. Now we have to either waste money on a player that isn't worth the money or trade valuable assets to cover for him. Yay!

I like Samsonov a lot and think he might thrive under Arniel's system. I could live with Wolski, or Hemsky.

I hope Howson has the brains not to force Johansen because of this, and dislike the idea of moving Vermette to the wing in response.

But, really, anybody but Zherdev. I mean, bring back Robert Kron, for Christ's sake, but not Zherdev!!!

I think that Nash was not too fond of Zherdev, but does anyone know what kind of relationship Nik might have had with Carter? Not suggesting the animals run the zoo, but I suspect the opinions of the team's top two players might be solicited before risking so much on a problem child like him.

This could be a blessing in disguise.

It's clear Howson's hand is forced to add another guy with some skill and that isn't a bad thing. Wolski or Prospal would be fine.
If at least one of Calvert, Johan or Atkinson show some consistent offensive pop early, all the better.

I wouldn't chase any trades right now unless a great deal came across the desk (which isn't going to be Hemsky).

Trading Brass or Vermette at this point would be idiotic.

edit: I've always liked JP Dumont. He looked pretty busted last year though. Only 33, but not sure how much he has left.

Stillman is 4 year older but has more left, IMO. He'd be my first UFA preference, with Propsal right behind and close enough to where the contract price mattered.

just said it on the trade board if Edm fans start with the Hemsky proposals I (me, prob not many here, or the org itself) am only willing to part with a 2012 2nd rounder with changes to a 4th if he doesn't play in atleast 50 games this season...

Why do you think I want Stillman? Then you only need Sidney Crosby...

Did Carter and Prospal play on the same line in Philadelphia? I'm sure that Howson will probably be picking the brain of his new elite player. Prospal was back with the Flyers in 07-08 for 18 games.

Also, did Antti Miettinen sign in the KHL? If not, he could be an option.

I would also be okay signing Cory Stillman, I've mentioned him on these boards before.

Svatos I'm on the fence about, he does a lot of bouncing around for a reason. Samsonov, maybe. For some reason I had injury prone going through my head on him, but after looking at his stats, he actually pretty reliable. Certainly another option.

That said, Howson's going to have to get these guys on the cheap, which might be difficult for guys like Prospal, Stillman and Samsonov. If he could lure Stillman and Prospal here on one year deals, I think this team is a definite playoff team. Once Juice comes back you'd definitely have three scoring lines.

Antti did go to KHL I believe it was confirmed...and I agree with your last paragraph....

This could be a major blessing in disguise. Imagine Howson signs a skilled stopgap player for a year or two, then in January Juice comes back and is 100% by the end of February. The team then has just that one more skilled guy for a stretch run and the playoffs.

Then if your scenario should happen to play out, meaning one or more of the kids surprises without the weight of being forced to do this, you have a hell of a team on your hands.

Edit: For the poster asking about Prospal and if he was on Carter's line, Prospal was on the Briere line in Philly. Understand those lines weren't set and Stevens was mixing and matching as needed.

Prospal - Briere - Hartnell
