I'm pretty sure the TSN article had the same comment but either way it's still the most relevant part of the stroy. Politics always boils down to the fine print.
The guess the big question is where they can find $100 mil in infrastructure value. I want to think the LRT station is already in the works as part of the EPCOR tower so there is no money there but it may not be out of the question for things such as a practice facility, sports museum, perhaps the 'winter garden' over top of 104 ave and the such.
I guess the other thing that never seems to get mentioned is that although $450 mil is the target, $350 mil seems to be secured and if memory serves me there has only been one new arena recently built that has cost more than $350 mil. In other words, the worst case may be to just reset expectations abit.
This is just my opinion but I don't think the Oilers or Katz ever expected to get 100 million directly towards the arena.
If "direct" money was their only goal then why are they still talking to Stelmach?
I don't think this is a doom and gloom report. Stelmach has been saying the same thing from the beginning.
Also with all the talk of the next Premier being someone from the South, you better hope CGY is asking for money for an arena because I don't see someone from the South spending money on Edmonton.

Better hope? I would say it's safe to say that Calgary is loving this whole thing.
They are staying two steps behind Edmonton so they can quietly reap the benefits of Edmonton's leg work.
Last I heard they have their land picked out and are starting to look at design concepts.
I noticed a significant amount of people saying "see you in Kansas City, Oilers" in the comments of the main article. Concerning. I had thought this battle was won as far as keeping the oil drop in EDM
Flames and Canucks trolls.
And the TSN comment section is almost as bad as the youtube comment section. Especially for butthurt fans of two certain western Canadian teams who can't resist getting a shot in at the Oilers whenever they can.
And I don't see why this is such big news. The prov. gov't said before they won't be subsidizing a new arena, but open to projects directly tied to it, like LRT, pedestrian needs, etc
If you guys actually think things will be better under a new conservative premier or after the next election a weaker con party or wilfd rose party I believe you are mistaken. These guys will get a heck of a lot more votes being hard line about not spending on an arena than the other way around.

They are never going to put 100 milion directly on the arena. It will be a money shuffle of mad proportions.
It will be all on "infrastructure" and spun politically in 100 directions. It won't matter who is in the Government, money spin has been around since the dawn of Government.
If they're worried about revenues why not just stay at RX1 and dramatically raise ticket prices again. If the current rexall can harvest the same revenues as a new barn would, as long as Katz gets his money does he really even care where it comes from.

Do you really think a ticket price increase is going to raise revenues enough to meet all of the amenities that will be a part of the new arena?

Because the boy wants a shiny new bike, not a tune up on the old one...
Look if you want to stick your head in the sand that's fine, but when the heavens come crashing down upon us, we'll see who is best prepared for the following trials and tribulations.
Where will the extra cash come from? Katz might have to cave in? I really don't know how this will work.
He should. there should never be public funds for arenas. there shouldn't be a ticket surcharge, either.
While I'd love a new rink, it should be done with private money or not done at all.

There is already a ticket surcharge and has been for years!

It's Alberta. They could campaign on how they want to walk around giving people the middle finger and the conservatives would still get voted in.
This province and this city have wasted millions upon millions of dollars on useless crap, and now they're refusing to put some money towards something that Edmontonians could actually be proud of, that would revitalize a dying downtown core...
Remind me why we continue to elect these morons?
Oh. and their are oiler fans from all over Alberta, that will be at one time or another spending their hard earned cash in Edm when visiting to see Oilers, a cooncert, or whatever may be going on at the new arena.
I'll bet travel Alberta brochures will want to be showing off the new arena/oilers, as well as Flames/new arena down the road.
Its in their/ours best interest, long term.
He didn't say no people, all he said (as he has said from the beginning) that he would not put 100 million directly into the arena itself. This isn't even news.
It's the same thing he has been saying for two years!

This option gives the fans nothing more than they have now.
