For sure. And unless he puts up 30+ goals this year I see him signing back in ANA where he had some very good years and its also close to home.

Hi Gang... the fat jokes have been removed and they aren't going to be allowed moving forward. Enough's enough.

I realize this is one of the more boring off-seasons on record but we're not going to let every thread on Doughty and Penner turn into a fat joke thread.

Thanks...

That's fine and dandy as long as he helps the Kings win.

Good on you. They were just saturating the threads and making it harder to find the relative posts. Thanks for trimming the fat!

Very nice interview with Hammond:

Quote:
PENNER: “Now it’s pretty much an 8 (a.m.) to 2 (p.m.) job. I think a lot of guys who come from other teams, we share that feeling that we weren’t used to this type of intensity. But it’s definitely (a good thing). I think you can attribute some of their start last season [12-3 in the first 15 games] to the training they did in the offseason. With the team we’ve got this year, and everybody on the same page as far as that goes, we will be tough to stop.”

PENNER: “Well, like I said, these workouts are different than I had encountered before. It’s really exciting to be part of something this special with a guy like (strength and conditioning coach) Tim Adams. As far as the culture, Edmonton was really young. Here, I think it’s more middle of the pack. We have some older guys, but I think we’re all around 27, 28, right around there, as the average age. I think we’ve got the perfect mix of players to do some damage.”

On other changes he's made this summer - "With these workouts it's tough to make it to midnight. I'm usually in bed around 11. That's pretty much all the changes. Oh - and I go through shoes quicker."

Maybe it's just because it's his contract year, but he sounds more focused and team-oriented. I think a lot of it last year was him getting his bearings in a new environment and a new team. It's great to hear that we're putting the players through a thorough and tough workout.

Oh and this reference was awesome:

From Hammond:
Quote:
Question: When you hear the criticism of you, does it bother you?

PENNER: “No. Less and less. The one thing I can say, and I don’t know if you watch `The Simpsons,’ the episode with Darryl Strawberry, when they start (chanting) `Darryl, Darryl,’ and there’s a tear in his eye. I used to laugh at that, and now I don’t. [laughs]”

Good stuff:

"On the intensity of the workouts - "I think the duration of it is more new (to me). Most of my workouts in the summers (before) have been around two hours, maybe a little longer, depending on the day - along with an ice time session. Now, it's pretty much an 8-2 job. It's different for a lot of guys who have come from other teams to here. I think we all share that feeling where we weren't used to this type of intensity...I think you can attribute some of their (the Kings) start last year to their training in the off-season...With the team we have this year and everybody on the same page as far as that goes, we'll be tough to stop."

I think that this is the first time he has been part of a team. A few years ago, Greene and Brown instituted a summer workout program for the players in LA and his has been very successful. I don't think Edmonton ever had summer workout programs for their players.

It was nice of Penner to atribute some of the early season success to how hard the team, at least the players that stay in LA, works in the summer.

I hope that Richards, Kopitar and Doughty come to camp in top NHL-shape. Starting in Europe means the Kings need to be ready and get off to a strong start again. That 12-3 start was key to the Kings making the playoffs, especially after Kopitar and Williams were hurt late in the season.

Absolutely fascinating interview. I expect a lot out of him, and it sounds like he is doing all he can to deliver.

It also shows how this is the time to start showing a little encouragement to one of our own freakin players.

He had a good start and then trailed off after Kopi went down. Its obvious he was planning on giving less effort physically on an Oilers team that was going nowhere and then he got dealt to us and had a hard time keeping up.

The guy is putting in the work and has proven skills.

I applaud his efforts and think he will have the kind of season that people have when they put a serious amount of effort preparing for one.

Great work Pens and I think your right, were going to do some damage.

The funny thing about being a profession athlete is that if you start performing, all the haters and criticism go away. It seems like Penner is getting himself ready to do that.
