It's a shame, but he likely has played his last game in the NHL. The Canucks had everyone and their mother get hurt on defense last year, and Parent only played 4 games, and they were in October before they all happened.

He was so solid until his back got screwed up for good. It really is a shame.

Maybe he would've been our number 6 shutdown guy these last couple of years if not for injuries.

Didn't know where to put this and didn't want to dig up any threads. Feel free to delete or move as necessary.

Mike Richards gave a candid interview with Sports Illustrated and has some strong words about Holmgren, figured you guys would want to read, I would if it were Simmonds commenting on Lombardi...

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...#ixzz1ZUYlEZC8

Quote:
"When you don't win, the panic button sets in and you get traded," Richards says. "But it's not like we lost to bad teams. The last three years, we lost to the teams that went on to win the Stanley Cup. They wanted a goaltender, and did what they felt they had to do."

Richards was maybe even more perplexed at how the Flyers could have traded Carter, who had signed his own mammoth 11-year, $58 million contract early last season in a move that was portrayed as his taking a hometown discount to guarantee his staying a Flyer.

"From when he signed his deal, I guess they were shopping him right after, which was, I think, kind of a slap in the face," Richards says. "You get talked into taking less money to stay on a team that you want, then find out you get shopped right after you sign that deal -- frustrating.

(Holmgren) and I had a great relationship over the years I was there, but things like that that happen, it's tough not to lose a little respect for him maybe."

I understand where Richards was coming from, they were two best friends who planned to stay on the same team the rest of their careers. And it was a "slap in the face" to trade them both to different teams after signing them for that long.

If we're talking on-ice issues alone and Holmgren is doing something like that? Sure. I would lose respect for him as well.

Considering the great mass of nonsense this cluster has turned into, I'm pretty sure that this was not just hockey related.

This was a culture issue, regardless of what the problem was.

When you want to see change, you impose change.

Holmgren wasn't sitting in his office day 1 after the Carter signing thinking about the best way to **** over the two young, incredible talented faces of his successful multimillion dollar franchise.

So, I have 2 trade requests...

Callahan for Voracek...
John Carlson for Adam Larsson (who may not play much)...

Your thoughts?

depends on your stats. if you're in a league that does hits or SH stats (like a couple of my leagues), the Callahan is probably much more valuable than Voracek. Same with the defensemen, I would assume Carlson will rack up +/- with WAS while Larsson may struggle in NJ, unless he's on the first pairing playing with that beast 1st line.

Fantasy Question about Schenn

I took Brayden Schenn in my fantasy league and I was just wanting to see if flyers fans think he will make the team and stay all year?

I do not like where hitting is going in hockey. Whenever someone has his head down, he is invincible. This should not be happening. Honestly, I hope these suspensions stop. This is getting out of control by trying to keep it in control.

Looks like he was just sent down. I assume he could very well be called back up if things go well in the AHL, which they likely will. Still, he could play the whole year there and challenge for the AHL rookie of the year award.

They're not going to stop. In fact, it's exactly what the league wants.

You can hit, you just can't hit someone in the head or back.

Callhan on your stats. If it counts hits then go with Callahan.

Larsson will play a lot and should even get primo PP time as he has no real competition for it. I'd go with Larsson personally as I see better potential in him.

  • Giacomo leads but...
  • Afleet Alex just ran right by Giacomo like he was standing still.
  • Afleet Alex is opening up with a tremendous burst of energy. He's five lengths in the lead.
  • A compelling outstanding performance by the plucky Afleet Alex. He won by six or seven lengths.

Is Brayden Schenn set to be on the roster full time this season? and if so, where would he be penciled in on the depth chart?

It's possible but complicated by a recent injury and salary cap conditions. Training camp saw a "find" with Matt Read at forward. There's also the depth at defense that needs to be considered.

This is one recent speculation:

http://articles.philly.com/2011-09-2...rgei-bobrovsky

Quote:
Holmgren said he was happy with the performances of Couturier and Schenn in camp.

"I think Brayden has a little more scoring ability, and Sean is a little more well-rounded player who probably looks to pass more than Brayden," he said.

Holmgren said it was "not out of the question" that both make the team.

With two exhibitions remaining, a lot can happen to change the Flyers' plans, but here is how the lines could look for next week's opener:

Danny Briere centering Scott Hartnell and Jakub Voracek.

Claude Giroux centering James van Riemsdyk and Jaromir Jagr.

Schenn centering Wayne Simmonds and Read or Couturier.

Blair Betts centering Zac Rinaldo and Max Talbot.

The defense probably will look like this:

Chris Pronger and Matt Carle, Kimmo Timonen and Braydon Coburn, Andrej Meszaros and Andreas Lilja. Oskars Bartulis would be the extra defender.

Unless you're in a huge league (12 teams or more, more than 20 roster spots, etc.) there are better options available. Schenn will have a solid year WHEN he gets a chance with the Flyers, but may only max at 40 points.

Sam's (Inquirer) blog from post-practice on Sunday...

Quote:
General manager Paul Holmgren said he probably won’t finalize his decision until Wednesday at 3 p.m., when rosters must be submitted to the NHL.

Schenn, who missed the last two preseason games because of a shoulder injury, has a $3.1 million salary-cap hit. If he starts the season with the AHL Phantoms, the Flyers will have cap space to include a player like defenseman Matt Walker ($1.7 million cap hit) on their roster.

Acquired in the blockbuster summer deal that sent Mike Richards to Los Angeles, Schenn was injured in an exhibition Monday against the New York Rangers.

“It would have been nice to get a couple more games in, but I’m feeling pretty good; it was a faster recovery than I thought,” said Schenn, who later had an ice pack on his left shoulder. “I’m shooting the puck hard and hope it gets better every day. Should be 100 percent coming up here” on Thursday.

Schenn, 20, regarded as one of the NHL’s up-and-coming young player, said he “absolutely” wants to start the season with the Flyers instead of Adirondack. He did not take any contact Sunday.

“I feel like I’m ready to play and ready to help this team, but at the same time, it’s their decision,” he said.

Asked if he had seen enough of Schenn to make an evaluation, Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said, “I thought he played well. I would have liked to have seen him more. Andreas Nodl, the same thing. We’re trying to slot people and find out the jockeying of everything, and that makes it difficult when guys aren’t in the lineup.”

Like Schenn, Sean Couturier, 18, is a center who is on the bubble. He might open the season with the Flyers and, after 10 games, be sent to juniors if they don’t think he is NHL-ready.

“I thought he had a good camp,” Laviolette said. “Defensively, he did a lot of things right. He played a good, solid two-way game. He threw in some points and was a plus-player. We used him in just about every situation imaginable.”

Barring a trade, it’s likely two of the following three forwards will make the team: Schenn, Couturier and Matt Read.

How has Simmonds been pre-season and who is he likely to spend most of his time lined up next to?

Third line equals:

Nodl/Read/Talbot - Couturier/Schenn - SIMMONDS

In fact, pretty much our entire training camp boils down to who will be playing with Simmonds.

Wow, I bet Gordie Howe hated that call. Not a penalty, just protecting yourself with a guy bearing down on you. It's how guys used to protect themselves before padding got alot better and the league rewarded people putting themselves in vulnerable positions. Everyone is looking up at the big screen to see what exactly happened to make that a penalty.
