WPG definitely says no. Don't think PIT does it either.

Kane + a potential lottery pick is significantly too much to pay for a 2nd line centerman.

It's not bad, but I think the Pens can probably just keep what they have and be fine. If anything I'd rather see a player come back instead of the 1st rounder, maybe Oduya, and Winnipeg takes Niskanen.

EDIT: I don't concur that the 1st would be a lottery pick. Probably around pick #10. Doesn't matter anyways. The Penguins have a few stars so I'm not as attracted to 1st rounders as much as some.

You're going to get flamed

I'm a Pens fan and have proposed a Staal for Kane swap straight-up in the past. I got flamed from Pens fans who wouldn't trade Staal, and flamed from ATL/WIN fans who didn't want to trade Kane.

I love both players but would take Kane over Staal. Considering the former is younger and has higher upside, WIN would not do this deal. He will be their superstar, and they addressed their need at centre with Scheifele.

Take out the first rounder and it's a much more fair proposal. Both these players have equal value (although Kane's is probably higher due to upside, age & contract/UFA status).

If I was the Penguins I would do it. Kane with Crosby or Malkin would be sick and you can find cheaper options at center for the 3rd line.

This is one of the only Staal proposals I'd probably agree to.

That means absolutely nothing. I don't think there's any team in the league that immediately after drafting a guy thinks "well we're set at that position". Them drafting Scheifele would have no impact whatsoever on whether or not they accept a proposed deal for a center.

For reasons previously mentioned Winnipeg doesn't do this. Nothing against Staal who is one of the best defensive centre's in the league, but he is a UFA in two seasons. Kane is the Winnipeg franchise and has 5 years until UFA status. Add in the 1st and there is no way that Winnipeg handles its assets that way. Especially when you consider that a team in the stage that Winnipeg is in is looking to add MORE young talented players.

I wouldn't do it as a Pens fan, just because I like the 3C model and we are building our team around Crosby, Malkin, Staal and Fleury.

Kane is a very good player. Winnipeg shouldn't do this simply because he has a lot of potential and could be a franchise player for them.

I would do this from Pitt's perspective, but i doubt WPG offer that much for Staal so what we'll do is offer you Niskanen also . Although i think Staal would thrive with the Jets in a bigger role and more minutes and probably get 60-70 points playing while playing great defense.

That's right. And Kane is anything but guaranteed to be a future superstar.

Stick around awhile and find out.

Future superstar!?!? Doubt it. Top 10 pick? Could be awesome, could be bust, there's no guarantee. Do Penguins, that are in the "win now" mode really need something like that in return for Malkin?! Yeah, like a bad case of crabs.

wrong team added the first. hell even if it was the other way around i wouldn't do it if i were winnipeg

kane will likely score 40 a year in his prime, is good defensively, and is 19. he hasn't grown into himself yet either. as he adds more muscle he's going to explode, especially considering the fact that he plays a power forward style.

staal proved this year he is nothing more than a second line center. a good one, but nothing more. you don't trade what will likely be a perennial all star for that.

How many top 10-15 picks get called future (super)stars, 40 goal scorers, 90points, etc. How many of those players reach that level. How many turn out decent, or bust? Just what I thought.

I rather have Kane though, won't need to improve much to be better then Staal.

I'd do a Kane/Staal swap with another pick coming back our way...one of very few I'd consider. The first from Winnipeg is overkill, though, it'd be more in line with a 3rd or so.

Anyone thinking a 1st and Kane would be enough for Malkin, however, is delusional.

From some of these responses you'd think it was P Kane not E Kane.

One abbreviated season is hardly the be all and end all for a player.

That's a BOLD statement. Malkin hasn't fallen that far where that's all he commands, no knock on Kane.

Staal + Desperes for Kane + pick?
