Niittymaki out for 12 weeks for the Sharks.

The Sharks will be without backup goalie Antero Niittymaki for an estimated 12 weeks after he underwent hip surgery in Los Angeles.

Niittymaki has been dealing with lingering pain since missing 17 games last season with a lower-body injury. When the pain continued despite traditional treatment, he consulted a specialist and had the procedure done earlier this week.

The surgery did not catch the Sharks by surprise. In July, they signed goaltender Thomas Greiss to a two-year contract at least in part because of the possibility that Niittymaki would be sidelined, general manager Doug Wilson said Thursday.

Yea, so far I'm liking it.

I think him being an actual player, especially at that level really helps, as he has a different take on how serious some of those hits can be.

I'm sick of all the cheap shots, and I'm extremely pleased with what he's been doing so far.
