30 to 1 odds aren't to good. But it'll make a win that much better.
I think it was more of the allure of being in vegas and placing bets at the sportsbook
I placed a parlay of the Mets, a WNBA team and an Arena Football team because I wanted to make a degenerate bet. I hit everything but the mets haha.
In 05-06 I placed a pre-season bet on Oilers to win the cup, was around the same odds. Maybe I should do the same, with a one game better result hopefully.

yea, the allure. i was in vegas in college - probably about five years ago - and made a 50 dollar bet for st. john's to cover like +28 against duke. i of course lost. 28 points. really?

PS. Screw the Canes.
For the NFL you can often place the bet on which team makes the Superbowl...so if you'd done that you'd have gotten paid. Jets last two years were like 30-1 I think to make it there. I didn't actually bet it though i will this year

I refused, anytime I bet on the Rangers they lose haha.
Still find it very strange that I can't just wander down the St and place a bet on a game while I'm over here. Is it due to some kind of anti-corruption/match fixing thing?
Maybe you guys should introduce gambling in all States and tax the crap out of it to help with the debt crisis

Why they'd rather just take our money without us feeling like we're ever going to stand a chance to get it back.
There are a few Indian casinos in upstate New York, with more opening in coming years.
There is also a major casino hub in Atlantic City, NJ about 2.5 hours away. There are also several major casinos in Connecticut a couple.hours away.
There are about a zillion bookies in NYC as well. Just see to it not to get too deep into the red with these guys or the juice can cost ya a finger or two...literally
I never understood gambling. Billion dollar casinos don't exist because they're giving money away. And don't tell me it's the small vig fee either.
You don't gamble to win. You gamble to have fun. You pay for entertainment.
Think of it this way: if you go to a Rangers game, you will lose money, right? You have to pay for the ticket, for parking, for beer? You are probably down a couple hundred dollars assuming you get good, but not great tickets plus a beer and some snacks. What's the difference between that and going to a casino where you spend a couple hundred dollars a night?
You just have to be responsible about it. Don't throw away hundreds of dollars every night and don't lose thousands in one night either unless you make a million+ a year.
But responsible gambling, where you realize that you are paying to have fun, is alright.

A lot of people I see at the casinos aren't there to have fun, they're there to feed their gambling addiction. I play casino games for a living at the moment so I'm there every week. It's amazing how many of the same people I see there every week (and of course, they're losing players). When you're going every week to blow your paycheck that's no longer entertainment, that's a problem, and that's where a big chunk of the casinos' profits come from.

It's actually because most people aren't capable of managing money correctly and place huge bets hoping to hit it large. When the majority falls into that category it's pretty easy to understand why casinos and sports books make tons of money.
But to assume it's impossible to win/make money at it is pretty foolish. There's plenty of people who do. They're just not the majority. And as long as it stays that way (which it always will), the casinos and books have nothing to worry about.

It's actually really easy to win money at the casino.
The hard part's money management and not getting kicked out of the place

He asked a question saying he doesn't understand why people gamble. Some do it the unhealthy way and some just do it as occasional entertainment. I gave him the reason I gamble.
I go to a casino, lose a couple hundred dollars and get a free room in a very nice hotel. That's better value than buying Ranger tickets. You just have to not be crazy when it comes to gambling.
