I would take Nicklas Lidstrom in half a heartbeat.

He plays consistently, he doesn't miss games for injuries (what, 13 games out of over a thousand or something like that?), he plays the game with smarts, and I've never seen him take a stupid penalty in my life...also, as was stated above, 3 Norris Trophies and 5 nominations has some clout to it.

Pronger may have the physical wherewithal, but I pick Nick.

I'd go with Lidstrom, they're both good Dmen, but Nic has the cups and has proven himself in the playoffs more so then Pronger IMO.

Hasn't this topic been beating to death over the years?

I'd choose Nick cause i'm a Wings fan. But you can go wrong with either of them.

Lidstrom... he can handle absolutely anybody. it's not often i pick the less physical defensemen, but Lidstrom is just in a class all by himself.

Both are awesome.

IMO, Lidstrom is the better of the two. Taking that a step further, I think he was quietly the best player in the NHL for several years. He was as close to a flawless player as there was.

Offense, he was the top scoring defender in the league. He ran the PP, he scored goals, he made plays. Defense, he just didn't make mistakes. He shadowed top players and tied them up without ending up in the penalty box. He came up big in the clutch with outstanding post-season performances. Only knock on him was that he wasn't a bone jarring hitter. That said, he had the size and strength to not get run over.

Lidstrom in a nanosecond.

#1 Less Penalties

#2 Pronger has a bad temper

#3 Injuries (2 knee surgeries ; 3 wrist)

#4 Leadership Lidstrom > Pronger

BTW - Stich - Chill out. They're all Opinions.

Also - I think that Lidstrom has always been overshadowed by the offensive firepower and (at times) great goaltending of Detroit.

I would take Pronger if he was healthy (no major surgeries) and didn't take stupid penalties.

This is coming from a poster who has watched almost every Blues game for the last 15 years.

Lidstrom

Will play every year every game. Will make it thru the play-offs. Is jsut as effective with out getting injured.

Prongers game depends on his physical play. And his physical play results in him missing 10-20 games a year, sometimes more. [sometimes less]. If you remove physical play from pronger, you get plays like Datsyuk making him look like a Pylon when he came back form injury. Pronger HAS to play physical to play his game. If hes not, hes average. But if he does, he will always spend time in the press box nursing injuries, or like this past play-offs.. Spending time in the penalty box.

Meanwhile lidstrom plays JUST as effective, shuts down the same exact players.... but never misses a game, never spends time in the box, and is never taken off his game.

Bottom line is, take the physical player out of pronger, and hes a scrub. Keep it, and hes one of the most domenating defensemen in the game, who misses extended periods and can take a bad penalty. Lidstrom is one of the most dominating defensemen in the game, and he has no downside.

Pronger is the better defensemen. Yet, if I had to choose on to have on my team, things would be quite different. Pronger is extremely physical, uses his size much more effectively, and just as dominant offensively as Lidstrom. Unfortunately, the combination of his temper and health are usually one or the other. Therefore I choose, Lidstrom for who I would take on my team, but in terms of the best defensemen: Pronger...He is everything you want in a dman, and has the one attribute that Lidstrom does not......physical prowess.

They're both amazing and Lidstrom is smarter.

I think Lidstrom has more pure talent as well (particular in terms of skating). But, yeah, I'd take Pronger for the same reason.

A few years ago I would have picked Lidström without hesitation. Extremely smart player. But he is getting slower which hurts his game. Todays it is a tossup for me, perhaps a small edge for Pronger since Lidström isn't going to get faster.

Lidtrom: healthier, better goal scorer, better point producer, smarter, better skater, less penalty prone.

Pronger: nastier, stronger, better hitter.

I also think Lidstrom can play his existing game until he is 38-40, while I'm not sure Pronger can. Something to think about if you were taking the player for a career rather than just one year.

I'd take Lidstrom for just one year, but it would be very close (almost depend on the makeup of the exisiting D). For a career Lidstrom hands down.

Nicklas Lidstrom is the better of the two, though some nights/years it looks closer than others. While Pronger possesses a physical package that Lidstrom does not, Lidstrom may very well be the smartest player in the NHL right now. For my money, he's the best player in the league overall. Whereas Pronger still makes the occassional brainfart and goes off the deep end from time to time, Lidstrom is as cool as a cucumber, and you can count the defensive mistakes he makes over the course of a season on your hands.

Lidstrom, for my money, is the best defensive defenseman in the league, as well as the best offensive defenseman in the league - though he does not always put up the best numbers. In fact, I think Nick is quite comparable to guys like Ray Bourque and Denis Potvin. I think he's right there with Potvin, and I have him actually ahead of Ray.

Good physical defenseman like Pronger are hard to come by. If I had to pick one it'd be Pronger. Not a knock on Lidstrom, but I also watched the Devils crease get owned by the Flyers last Spring. Lidstrom isn't exactly the type of guy to intimidate players and sometimes I think that can be a valuable asset.

Hm....seems about 50/50 so far.

Personally, I would choose Lidstrom.

Lidstrom has only missed 18 games his whole career, most of those games were games where the coaches would rest him up before the playoffs. As other posters have said, Nick plays every game, every year...you know what Lidstrom brings to the table every single time he's on the ice, you can't say the same about Pronger.

Some posters say they would choose Pronger over Lidstrom because Lidstrom doesnt' exactly intimidate opposing forwards?

I say, it doesn't matter whether or not the opposing forwards are intimidated or not because Lidstrom will just shut them down just as effectively with his positional game, his smarts and defensive awareness.

Pronger is a very, very close 2nd though.

when he doesnt hit because he is getting called for everything in the book or is nursing an injury, he is almsot ineffective. Players go right around him, he doesnt take the body.

take the physicality out of Pronger and he has nothing on any top 4 defensemen in the NHL.
