Another year of Backlund not getting a true chance?

I like Morrison, but I was really hoping he would end up somewhere else. I suppose we can always flip him for a pick at the deadline if he performs well for us.

Morrison starts the year injured. He's good depth, and if the Flames tank, he's probably worth a second rounder at the deadline.

I sincerely hope not. And I doubt it. Backlund will likely be given the chance up front, regardless of Morisson's status.

Backlund has to earn it. Especially when he is given a "true chance" like last season when Morrison went down.

Calgary missed him down the stretch, good signing BUT backlund needs a real chance to show what he can do

Was the #1C in CGY during the second half of the season until he hurt his knee. By re-signing, he stays just an hour flight away from his home in Coquitlam BC.

Somebody has to go...

Statements like this are silly. If Backlund is ready to play, he will earn his "true chance". If he can not outplay a 35 year old Brendan Morrison, he is not ready yet.

Trust me. Rushing him is a bad idea. I wish Gagner hadn't gotten a "true chance" for a couple years. Instead he was spoonfed ice time, and, although it is arguable and still too early to tell, he has not performed up to expectations.

With that said, I recognize this isn't an 18 year old who was just drafted. If Backlund deserves the ice time, he will get it, and thats how it should be. Competition for roster spots is not an unhealthy atmosphere for a player with a positive attitude.

Good re-signing for the Flames. One of their best moves of the offseason IMO. Brendan Morrison had a solid year for them last year. He can play anywhere in the lineup and he can play on both the PP and PK. Calgary doesn't have a true #1 center so keeping Morrison is good for their center depth.

I'm actually a bit surprised he was out there for this long. I wanted Buffalo to take a look at this guy but he's off the market now. He's 35 years old and still producing. He's an important guy to the Flames. If they're out of it, like another poster said, flip him for a pick/prospect at the deadline if they can.

Not sure what is ''silly'' about it. With Morrison healthy, the Flames have 5 centers who fit in the top 9. Who is paying the price?

It goes hand in hand, sure the player has to ''earn'' it, but the team has to also put him in a position to succeed.

FWIW, the Flames board seems to be mostly of the same opinion as me.

Calgary - Out

Regehr
Pardy
Erixon
Staios
Conroy
Kotalik
Modin

Calgary - In

Butler
Baertschi

Only question is, do they start the rebuild at the trade deadline/next off-season or go all out for 1 more year (Iggy's last under contract).

Isn't this almost the exact same team (less Regehr) that Sutter put together at the beginning of last year?

Wow, Feaster is sure putting his stamp on the team

Good signing for Calgary, he was a playmaking stud last season. Hoping he does the same this coming season.
