Is this really necessary? Why not just use the current world champion tampa bay lightning. They won the cup with a payroll much less then 60 million and they will still be the team to beat next year.

Well, the point system isn't realistic (based solely on point production), but I think this team would win rather easily:

Kovalchuk (4220) - Marleau (3310) - Fedetenko (2240)
Samsonov (2420) - Lemieux (2480) - Iginla (5030)
Hartnell (2250) - Madden (2200) - Orszagh (2110)
Nieminen (1360) - Fisher (1480) - Varada (1130)

Niedermayer (2870) - Foote (2140)
Ohlund (2220) - Aucoin (2600)
Phillips (1640) - Hannan (1500)

Luongo (5030)
Prusek (1380)

Totall: 50,610

ANYHOW...

This isn't exactly what was asked, but this is how the BOSTON BRUINS could win the cup (or at least try, for once) if they spent $60 million:

Bergeron Thornton Demetra = $15m
Samsonov Nylander Lapointe = $12m
Hilbert Ricci Axelsson = $5m
Boyes Fitzgerald Samuelsson = $2m

Gonchar Boynton = $9m
Zhitnik Slegr = $6
Gill Moran = $3

Raycroft
Potvin
=$5

Btw, I love Lexicon's line up!!!
Total Cost: $57 million dollars, (use the extra for fill-ins!) and they'd probably still go first-round-and-out.

Some nice choices, Melvin. I wish Nieminen played with as much heart on Chicago as he did on Calgary, same goes for Simon.

Forwards-

Naslund(5550)-Sakic(4700)-Bertuzzi(4810)
Johnson(1750)-Fedorov(4400)-Heatley(4090)
Morrow(3180)-Draper(2720)-Lehtinen(2460)
Malone(1750)-Ruutu(1670)-Lupul(1280)

Total: 38360

Defense-

Gonchar(3400)-Lidstrom(3040)
Ozolinsh(1820)-Chara(3040)
Pitkanen(1480)-Regehr(1300)

Total: 14080

Goaltending-

Brodeur(5450)
Gerber(1270)

Total: 6720

Total Points: 59160

With line one, I obviously just picked who I thought were the best in the game at their position. Well, I actually think St.Louis is a better RW, but Bertuzzi and Nazzy have chemistry, and that line was awesome at the all-star game.

For line two, I picked what I think is a very stellar two-way line, featuring Dany Heatley, who is an elite RW and pretty good defensively, and also very young; Mike Johnson, who can be a 70-point scorer(PPG player on this line), who is also good in his own end; and Sergei Fedorov, possibly the best two-way player in the game.

On line 3, this is my grind line. Not only can all three score, but they're the top defensive forwards for their position, and they all are very hard workers.

Finally, for line 4, this is what I call me "future line". I do one for the last ranking of every position. I figure Malone, Ruutu, and Lupul on a line would tear it up, especially in the future.

For the first defensive pairing, I took who I thought is the best pure offensive defenseman, Gonchar, and the best defensive defenseman, Lidstrom.

For the second pairing, I took who I thought is the second best pure offensive defenseman, Ozolinsh, and probably the second best defensive defenseman, Chara.

For the third pairing, once again, it's a future pairing, with the offensively talented Joni Pitkanen paired up with the bruising Robyn Regehr.

Obviously, I took the best goalie in the game in Brodeur, who has also won three cups.

For the back-up, rather than going with an experienced playoff back-up, I went the future route again going with future sensation Kari Lehtonen, who will gain valuble experience under Brodeur, and giving him a rest every now and then.

This team could easily win the cup, IMO, and could probably be the most dominant team in NHL history.

I don't think these values are accurate at all. I built my team based on actually salaries, and the expectations of what raises the players will get next year. My Thornton and Gonchar are going to be earning 7million for example...

The values are for a fantasy sports game and aren't supposed to represent anything relevent to real life.

Elias (4410) - Koivu (2600) - Doan (3520)
Cole (2240) - Legwand (2630) - Langenbrunner (2180)
Sturm (2750) - Ruutu (1670) - Williams (2290)
Stevenson (1500) - Brylin (2100) - Asham (1680)

Chara (3040) - Stevens (1470)

McLaren (1250) - Regehr (1300)

Brodeur (5450)
Lehtonen (1270)

48 360......I wouldn't score many goals but I would beat the hell out of any team in the league.

I'm going with a MAX Scoring. I doubt the 4th line plays 2-5 mins a game.

Naslund(5550) Sakic(4700) Bertuzzi(4810)
Gaborik (3600) Joe Thornton(5000) Jarome Iginla(5030)
Heatley (4090) T Ruutu(1670) Doan (3520)
J Ruutu(1000) Chubarov (1100) King J (1000)

Alternative (realistic) 3rd/4th lines would be just $10 more.

Zherdev (1440) Ruutu(1670) Doan (3520)
Lehtinen(2460) Chubarov (1100) Cooke (2200)

41070

Ohlund (2220) Lidstrom(3040)
Niedermayer (2870) Foote (2140)
Pitkanen(1480) Regehr(1300)

13050

Nabokov (4590)
Lehtonen (1270)

5860

Payroll 59,980

$20 for a few beers to watch them play.

Well I'm not going to post a team, but I will say that it would look nothing like the 65-70 million the Leafs spent on their "veteran" club.

(Tie Domi wouldn't be my fastest player either)

....couldn't resist....sorry.

Naslund (5550) Sakic (4700) Iginla (5830)
Kovalchuk (4220) Lemieux (2480) Heatley (4090)
Nash (3180) - Primeau (2370) Bertuzzi (4810)
Malone (1750) - Yzerman (2440) St Louis (4490)

Jovanovski (2260) Foote (2140)
Pronger (3000) Aucoin (2600)
Bouwmeester (1090) Norstrom (1060)

Belfour (4570)
M-A Fleury (1840)

59,980

I tried picking a team that would be amazingly fun to watch, and very explosive offensively. There is tons of experience and leadership with Lemieux, Sakic, Yzerman, Primeau, Foote, and Belfour. Scoring will obviously be no problem with this year's three Richard winners and Art Ross winner, plus Sakic, Naslund and Lemieux. I think Heatley will be the best player in the world in a few years, and Malone is going to become somehow of a star himself.

The first line is composed of three guys who have been the best players in my opinion over the last 3 or 4 years. Sakic and Iginla played together at the Olympics and played well.

The second line is the game's two best young forwards, who play together anyways, centered by Super Mario. I couldn't imagine what Mario could do with these guys.

The third line brings the size, toughness, and grit. Primeau is a great two way center, Bertuzzi is the game's best powerfoward, and Nash the leading scorer and on his way to becomming a great powerforward in my opinion. Defense would hate to play against these guys.

The fourth line is kinda bringing together the past, present, and future.

On D, I just chose a mix of youth and experience, offense and defense. In net, I have Eddie, one of the game's top goaltenders perhaps of all time, along with Marc-Andre Fleury, possibly the game's future best goalie.

Replacing a few of the guys as they retire (Lemieux, Yzerman, Foote) this team start a pretty nice dynasty
