Who would you protect in an expansion draft?

If an expansion team were entering the league this year and they held a draft who would you protect? Under 2000 expansion rules it's either one goaltender, five defensemen, and nine forwards or two goaltenders, three defensemen, and seven forwards.

Exempt from the Expansion Draft are (i) all first and second-year pros and
(ii) unsigned draft choices (except unsigned draft choices drafted from
European clubs in the 2007 Entry Draft or before and who remain unsigned).

Mine would be:

Price, Markov, Weber, Gorges, Gill, Cammalleri, Cole, Plekanec, Gionta, Pacioretty, Kostitsyn, Desharnais, Moen, Darche

I could be wrong, but aren't ELCs automatically protected?

I see the sarcasm but Gill played a role in Pittsburgh winning so you can take the bold out there lol

Do prospects count as people you can protect?

True, but Gill brings more to our team than either of those two. I think Moen can be a better player this year as well with less time in top 6 / contract year too isn't it?

Moen's pretty good in the bottom 6, when he's playing his physical, hard nosed game, not trying to make pretty plays beside Gomez and Gionta. He's a type of guy we need in order to win though.

Good list but why protect Desharnais and White they haven"t played 50 games yet, unless you ahve to include playoff games.

You're right. I didn't think. I just assumed White and Desharnais played more than 50 games. Both are just under 50 if you exclude playoffs (which i think you do). In that case I'd replace them with Darche and Moen.

Is that your suggestion or a rule from 2000?

Here is what I used:

http://groups.google.com/group/alt.s...q&rnum=2&pli=1

Here is the list of guys actually protected and exposed in 2000.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/hoc...ailable_lists/

Note that Scott Gomez was exempt and had played over 50 games. Jaro Spacek had 145 games and two pro years under his belt. He was also exempt.

This 50-game rule appears to be a pure invention. It was actually ALL first and second year pros.

I was looking for that. I only found that 50 games thing.

I guess we'll use this new one.

Exempt from the Expansion Draft are (i) all first and second-year pros and
(ii) unsigned draft choices (except unsigned draft choices drafted from
European clubs in the 1996 Entry Draft or before and who remain unsigned).
