Hopefully no. I would rather keep a spot open going into camp, even with injuries this season, I would rather give some young players their opportunities.
On the one hand he's one of the primary reasons they made the playoffs last season. And certainly was a big difference maker. On the other hand, if Prospal (at this point in his career) is the big difference maker on a team, that tells you all you need to know about the team and what they are going to do once they make the playoffs.
You can't rely on an aging guy who has serious injury concerns. But when healthy he is by far way at the top of the depth chart on the team. And can play two positions on the top two lines if need be. That's valuable versatility. And he comes cheap to the rangers.
When healthy they are a better team with him. When injured they struggle to fill the void and he's a high risk for injury. So I guess it doesn't really matter either way... unless you can convince yourself this team is a contender or something like that.
We have 14 forwards (including Zucc and assuming Dubi/Cally are re-signed which is pretty much 100% going to happen). There is just no room unless we dump Avery or EC or both, and/or Zucc starts in Hartford.
Vinny's one of those dudes who will get a high five and have many people around the city buy him a round if his Ranger career were to end today. Gave his all and has been one of the leaders.
That being said, if he's still unsigned by the start of camp, give him an invite and let him try and earn a contract.
If he's used in limited even strength minutes and on the PP he's still a very useful player and if they can have a fresh Prospal in the playoffs, he'd add a lot.

id bring him back due to his character and hustle on the ice. younger players can learn from him.. this is one of the reasons im glad Fedotenko has been back..they are good playoff players for a reason...certain players know how to play when the pressure is on..

Exactly. I'd much rather have Vinny Prospal on the wing than Avery, Wolski, or even Hagelin.

There's no doubt that if a rookie outperforms Avery, Wolski and/or Christensen he will have a spot. Signing Prospal doesn't change this. Hagelin and Zuccarello are the only ones I see a possible role for anyway (forward wise)

I'm not sure I agree with your assessment that there's "no doubt" if a rookie outperforms the aforementioned players that he'll have a spot. That might be a bit strong.
I've said it a number of times the past few weeks: I'd rather sign Prospal and find out we don't need him, than not sign him and later wish we had him.

I just feel like most of the people who say there's no room for Prospal are automatically assuming that Hagelin/MZA are locks on this team for the season.

Yup. Which I obviously disagree with.
There should be no locks. Outside of our core players, everyone should have to win their spot.

Which should be obvious to begin with, but even more so with a player that has never played professional hockey before and another who struggled mightily at times in his first season in the NHL.
I think like most I have high hopes still for MZA and am excited about Hagelin. Just know there's no way they can be penciled in right now.
Prospal will be signed in 15.6778 of your earth days. My intergalactic sources from Hogwarts tell me that the Headmaster of the Rangers is just waiting for the remaining 2 RFAs to be signed so that he can see how to fairly structure Prospal's 1-year contract [H6].
Those involved will say that this was the plan all along.
