Too much. Belanger who is everything we'd hope Cogs to become signed for less and isn't an unknown like Cogs.

That contract feels like Ana is paying him on potential. If Cogs can start winning draws and continues getting better defensively this contract looks good or great.

That's a lot of money, still though I wish him luck.

I hope that contract doesn't put too much pressure on him, sometimes this stuff can back fire on players that are still finding their way in the league.

Ducks must be hoping he turns into their 2nd line center?

All I can think of is that Gagner is going to receive a big payday next summer if he has another 40 point season.

The contract can maybe look good, but unless he is putting up 20g to go with the draws and defense that contract will never look great.

That's true, I just think most people here agree that it's a small chance he gets better on the dot and he's not gritty enough defensively.

For this reason, with RNH/Lander coming through the system, I think he signs his next contract with another team (after being dealt).

OT, but I think Cog's contract adds context to the Gagner debate.

That is a lot of coin. I think he will earn it myself but the cap is going up and low end salaries will go up as well. It will be interesting to see how things turn out.

In terms of the contract, that actually makes sense, if that's what they are thinking, have Getzlaf in front of him and Koivu behind him and let him develop into that two-way second line center, Mike Fisher-esq, if you will.

Not saying it will happen, or that it's a good contract, that just seems to me to be what they are thinking.

Also, I think this makes Gagner even more valuable in a deal.

The sad thing is depending on what happens with that McMillian kid, Cogs could be a 4th line center in ANA.

Wow, pure craziness for a center who has been so brutal with faceoffs. Really glad we dumped him. This has been one of the biggest issues of the Oilers in the past is that they wouldn't go out UFA day and sign that bottom six player, instead they just signed a palyer they had to an inflated contract.

To the Oilers:

Belanger at 1.75>>>>>>>>>>>than Cogs at 2.4(and even Cogs at 1.75)

I agree.
While he may turn out to be value at that price for the ducks, I would have freaked if the Oilers signed him to that kind of money.
For what he brought to the table for the Oilers at this point in time, he would have been worth about half of that.

I really like what cogliano COULD be in the NHL, but he's not that player yet...for him to be making SIGNIFICANTLY more than his replacement here in Edmonton (who can actually win faceoffs) is ridiculous.

I understand cap inflation played a role in this signing, just like it did with Smid, but that Cogliano contract is very much a "live up to it" contract if I've ever seen one.

Cogliano doesn't lack grit (if you think that, you clearly didn't watch him play last year), he lacks size. And lots of the NHL's best 3rd line centerment over the years have had similar measuarables as Cogliano. Madden, Draper, Marchant, Peca, Pahlsson, Desharnais, Belanger, Nichol, etc. aren't any bigger than Cogs is, and none of them were elite shut-down forwards at 23 either. They are all better faceoff men than Cogliano, and while I think he can improve, I don't think he'll ever be great on the draw.

That doesn't mean this contract isn't high for what he brings, but he could still very well become a pretty good 3rd line center and become the kind of player who's worth the kind of contract he just signed. I just don't get why the Ducks would give it to him before that happens though.

No kidding. I don't get what Anaheim is thinking, really. You don't pay to develop 3-4 centers. Just let the kid learn his trade in the Floridas and Minnesotas of the league for another 8-9 years, and then once he knows what he's doing out there, you sign him away with a huge contract of, oh, I don't know ... maybe 2.4 million? Giving him that money now = goofy, IMO.

Good for him. Probably an overpay, but I have a feeling he will pick up his play in Ana and make it a good deal for both sides.
