Habs might be the only franchise who could get criticised for re-signing their best player.

The crazy thing is, if Habs didn't sign him and he would've hit the market, he would've probably got more years and more $, and there'd be some bozo praising the signing instead of downplaying it, especially if that team was a league favorite like Detroit or Boston or New York...

Sergei Gonchar, several years older, similar injury and offensive history, got 3 years at 6.5 million per back when the salary cap was ~10% lower.

To be fair, a lot of people questioned that signing.

The Erhoff 10years/40M is a bargain.

He averaged 45pts per season for the last 3 season and has played 82, 77, 77, 80, 79 games the last 5 seasons.

Sergei Gonchar's contract last summer with the Sens was universally praised despite him coming off multiple seasons in which he had injuries...

We'll see that in the last 5 seasons of his contract.

I honestly think he is looking at point totals and not games played.

It's as if he was unaware that Markov was literally hurt for two years. Markov didn't have two bad years. He didn't play much.

Now if he'd argued that you don't give a guy a deal like that off of long term injury, I could see his point, but he makes it sound like they gave Cheechoo a contract.

that is what he did on an offensive team like Vancouver...lets see how it turns out in Buffalo...also as other posters have stated, what is this contract going to look like in 3 years....5 years.....7 years....

this contract had Brian Campbell written all over it.

I don't want to read the article again, but didn't he have the Jagr at 3.3m as one of the worst too? To me, this guy hasn't got a clue. There is little risk in signing Jagr to a 1 yr deal at 3.3m and would hardly quailfy as worse than Leino, who despite being much younger will likely still produce much less.

The Jagr signing has the potential to be the best signing of them all imo.

There are several facets to the re-signing of Markov, the least of which is the demonstartion of the team's committment to a player who has been one of the faces of the franchise for the past half decade. Without showing this type of committment, how is the team ever going to be successful in attracting prime - time free-agents in the future? Fortunately, the NHL is not like the NFL, where a player's salary is still taken into account with respect to the calculation of the salary cap even if the player is placed on IR. In this crazy world of professional sports where salaries seem to know no limits, the signing of Markov can only be viewed as prudent.

That is all.

I thought the Markov signing was pretty good...

Even with the cap hit, I don't like Ehrhoff's contract. 10 years is too long for him.

Would you prefer an 7 year, 42 million dollar contract over a 10 year, 40 million dollar contract for Erhoff?

I'm a huge rotoworld fan for baseball, football and even basketball news but their hockey articles are usually mediocre and I don't even bother reading them most of the time.

Markov will be fine. He came back after 5 months when he should've waited another month or two. This time he's not making the same mistake and he's probably in the best shape of his career. The guy is going to make the Eastern Conference remember how good of a player he is.

It's also possible Pronger or Lucic will give him a concussion 5 games into the season, and receive a 1-game (*maybe* 2 games) suspension for the incident.

As the Sedin's personal point man. He had a very plumb situation in Vancouver.

I remember watching the free agency coverage on TSN that day, and the general consensus was the Sens made a great signing.

What a farce! He obviously had no idea that Markov has been sidelined for the past 2 seasons. Which begs the question, why is this ignoramus writing anything about hockey?

A teen blogger who's used to posting tips on how to pop a zit without dirtying the mirror and how to get along with Mom's new boyfriend.

We should cut him some slack since most games finish past his 9pm curfew...

It was praised by the media and sens fans and you are right it was a general consensus.

Myself and my friend Sam both said this would be a terrible signing from day one. Call it a gut feeling, I've been wrong about many but this one I was so right.

It wasn't about the injuries for me, more-so it was about the fact that on a weaker Washington Capitals he put up the same numbers as he did on a stacked Pittsburgh Penguins. I saw Ottawa being a flop and didn't think without the supporting cast he had in Pittsburgh he'd be able to remain consistent. If anything his production should have skyrocketed playing with Crosby/Malkin all the time and on the PP but it actually remained the same.

Then throw on top of that the Moen goal in game 7... I will never be able to look at Gonchar the same again. Was so happy we didn't try signing him to takeover for Markov or something ridiculous like that. I also had a bad feeling we might try to sign him, thank god we didn't.

It isn't even an argument imo, TSN and all those networks said it was an amazing signing, in fact I even heard some of them claiming it was the best of free agency, and that made me lol more than ever considering my personal opinion of the matter. By far one of the worst signings.
