I've grown up to hearing Doc's voice since I started watching Devils hockey when I was 6 or 7. From SportsChannel to Fox Sports NY and now MSG+ I've watched and marveled at how brilliantly Doc called each and every game. It's sad because it makes me realize that I'm getting older and now comes the end of an era of one of the finest announcers in all of sports. We've been spoiled by his greatness and with that I say thank you Mr. Emrick and I have absolutely no hard feelings for your decision to leave because you've stuck with the team for 21 years, more than anyone would ever ask for. Thank you.
I think Cang has a good voice to call games, but his skill level isn't where it needs to be. He still botches names too much. Overall though, he's not bad.
I'm sorry, I cannot, cannot, cannot do Cangialosi full time.
i feel the same way.... u just can't go from Doc to Cangialosi.... its like having the highest of standards to the lowest... we need them to bring in a veteran stopgap til our prospects are ready.... and i really wouldn't mind bringing in some new prospects.
Cango's a nice guy, but I sure hope not. And they better keep Laughlin in the radio booth.
Matt was better on TV but he's still boring, Cangi actually got a lot better this year (see Salmela OT goal) and gets a bit of a bad rap, but yeah there's no replacing Doc. I'm glad he went national as opposed to another team, that would have just felt wrong. Plus he really did get overworked between three networks and periodic Olympic coverage too.
And if you ever did bring back Gary Thorne (I don't think that's realistic, given his own age and the fact he couldn't come until his contract with the Orioles ran out I think), you'd have to get rid of Chico - one airhead in the booth's enough.
You can assume that Cangiolosi is just going to take over. I'm sure that's why they got him in the first place. I don't think we're going to get an official announcement, really.
And great, we just signed a coach. Now we have another thing to delay the Parise signing.
No, you can't assume Cangi takes over. It is very unlikely that Cangi takes over. Cangiolosi is a studio guy, he did play-by-play as only as a fill in.
This is a prime job for a play-by-play guy given the market you are in and the success other guys have had with both MSG and the Devils. Look at our PBP history. We originally had Doc who let to do national work for ESPN. Then Thorne who left to do national work for for ESPN. Doc then came back and during his time he did National work for CBS, FOX, ESPN/ABC, and Versus/NBC. Look at other guys MSG employs Rosen does national work for FOX and did some work for Versus in the past. Knicks PBP guy is Breen who is the top NBA guy. And going back to hockey awhile back the Isles had Jiggs McDonald who was the top guy nationally for Sportschannel.
It is a prime job and given MSG's track record they will bring someone in of quality. My best guess is they move Kenny Albert off of Rangers radio and move him to Devils tv. They did a similar thing in '95 when Jiggs McDonald left the Isles for Florida with Howie Rose. Cangi would still be the fill in in this scenario when Albert does work for FOX.
Other possibilities may be Loughlin who has been on our radio or the wild card Gary Thorne who currently does Orioles PBP and was with us before Doc. Don't know his contract status with MASN, but with the playoffs going exclusively national in the 2nd round starting next year there is little overlap with baseball.
With this news, I've so happy to have had the pleasure of meeting the man. Even if it was just for a minute, he was one of the nicest guys I've ever met.
I hate the Devils but after having NHL Center Ice the past 4 years I came to the conclusion a while ago that Doc is the best, and least biased, announcer in the NHL. I was always happy he did the NBC/VS announcing, and it sucks since I get MSG that he won't do Devils games that I can watch (which I do watch the Rangers and Devils when the Flyers aren't playing). Best of luck to him, he really is the best of the best in my opinion.
What about Don LaGreca? He does PBP for the Rangers from time to time.
Would love to see him added, but not sure what his ESPN contract is. Even if they moved Cangi up to play-by-play he would make a great replacement for Cangi's current role.
