Defensemen to Columbus

Howson finally got his big first line center that has eluded this team since its beginning, but the team is still lacking on the blueline. James Wisniewski was a solid acquisition, but not enough to really make a change on their weak blueline. I mean look at this...

Wisniewski
Tyutin
Methot
Russell
Martinek
Russell
Clitsome

How unimpressive is that? That has to be one of the weakest groups of defensemen in the league.

Is Howson going to address this need or is he staying put with Wisniewski as their top guy? Would he consider offering McCabe, Hannan, Campoli or somebody still left on the market a one year deal?

That wouldn't help Columbus' problem. They've got enough guys like that. The need legit NHL dmen. Not necessarily the best the league has to offer or anything, but if Steve Mason is going to be hung out to dry if they role with this line up.

I'm not Scott Howson, nor am I Columbus Bluejackets fan so you're asking the wrong guy. I was merely pointing out how bad they needed help.

Though, and I'm sure everybody would hate to read this, Komisarek would be a big upgrade over what they currently have. That should tell you how bad their situation is on D.

This is more a question for ownership than management, I would think. Does the GM have budget flexibility?

From the OP's title, I fully expected to see a listing of existing CBJ defensemen as:

Bunny
Claus
McFly
Vader
Gump
Corleone
Griswold

and thus the urgency to find REAL defensemen...

This is absolutely the most ludicrously idiotic statement I have ever before seen regarding the Blue Jackets. Ever.

Wisniewski, Tyutin, Methot, and Martinek are all good top-4 defensemen. The blueline only seems unimpressive because we have absolutely no top-pairing guys. And those sorts aren't exactly cheap and quick to acquire.

This is therefore a conversation that will only lead to heartache and flames. It would be best to move on.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

I've read earlier that it was entirely possible that Stephan Robidas could be available from Dallas. Seems like the perfect fit for Columbus if you ask me.

To Columbus:
Stephan Robidas

To Dallas:
Derick Brassard + 3rd Round pick 2012

I think Brassard would be expendable from Columbus' side if Johansen really takes the form of a second line centre. Columbus also has Vermette/Umberger down the middle too so I could see this deal working for both teams.

Maybe if Robidas was 10 years younger.

"Takes the form" Does not mean he is going to play top 6 minutes this year. I'm saying eventually he will. Until then Vermette is more than capable to play that role. And Umberger is a very solid 3rd line centre.

I see what you're saying, but Umby is a winger.....at least now he is. Top 6 winger. Pahlsson for the 3rd line, and Johansen for the 4th this year most likely. I mean Brassard is as expendable as Vermette is, just remember that. Also Brassard can play the top line with Huselius out.

Ok, replacing Umberger for Pahlsson on the third line - still Pahlsson is an excellent third line center. Even if Umberger plays the wing on the second line for example, there's still ample move to move Brassard (not saying it HAS to be done, but the option is surely there)

I just don't see a player like Vermette fetching a #2-#3 Dman. In my eyes, Robidas is about as good a #2 defenseman as they come. Consistently ranking high in hits and blocked shots, plays PK, good defensively, can produce offensively, etc. I don't really think it'd be ideal for Columbus to go out and get another #4-#5 guy, it seems like they have quite a few that can fit that bill. I think Russell would benefit from having a guy like Robidas as a potential pairing too.

I understand the importance of having a playmaker to play the top line with Carter and Nash though, and if Huselius is out, Brassard is really the only option (or I guess Vermette too if he can play wing? Don't remember if he does or not.)

EDIT: Although, I could be wrong - perhaps Vermette could land a defenseman like Robidas. I'm just basing around the fact Brassard is younger.
