Stamkos Agrees To Five-year, $37.5m Contract With Lightning

STAMKOS AGREES TO FIVE-YEAR, $37.5M CONTRACT WITH LIGHTNING

Quote:
The Tampa Bay Lightning announced Tuesday that the club has agreed to a five-year contract with restricted free agent Steven Stamkos.

The 21-year-old will earn $37.5 million over the course of the deal.

"Steven is extremely important to this franchise and is part of the foundation of our hockey team," general manager Steve Yzerman said in a statement. "We are very pleased to have him signed and look forward to seeing him in a Lightning uniform for years to come."

Stamkos will earn $4 million in the first year with a $4 million signing bonus, $5 million in the second year with a $3 million bonus, $8 million in years three and four and $5.5 million in the final year, averaging $7.5 million a season.

I go back and forth on this. I'm concerned about what it would take to get him here, even if he was available via trade (I don't see an OS as a reasonable option--anything reasonable Tampa matches, anything unreasaonble puts us in a difficult position long-term).

Of course, if the deal was Couturier + other assets not named Giroux, JVR, or Schenn, I'd welcome the move. But I don't think that's realistic. Morel likely Schenn + Couturier or JVR +, and even though I'd welcome that trade in the short-run, I'm concerned that it would take away financial flexibility in the next few years by removing the controllable, (relatively) low-cost, potentially high-end assets from our line-up.

I'd send Bobrovsky and Couturier++. What those pluses are, I don't know yet.

Do you think Bob, Couturier, Carle and a 1st might be enough to get it done?

Have to send Schenn to AHL to make it work, I just don't see it. Could buy wiggle room by waiving Leighton and signing a super cheap backup.

Can't wait for the Stamkos quasi-sweepstakes to be over.

Afterwards we can all concentrate on more important (and more realistic) things.

there is no way TB makes a deal w/o Schenn being part of it. They need a NHL ready prospect to plug in to try and salvage some respect with the fan base.

Schenn + Bob + 2012 1st + 2013 1st

Most teams that are pursuing Stamkos won't be drafting in the top 10 for awhile. TB would get 4 1st from an offersheet late in the first round.

Schenn is a top 5 pick and BOB while not a 1st pick has #1 goalie upside.

Flyers hold on to Couturier as a #3 center of the future.

We need to send salary just to afford to sign Stamkos.

They likely wouldn't want Bob either, as they have two goalies under contract and Bob can't be sent to the minors. Plus they have Tokarski in the minors.

Multiple sources have suggested to CSNPhilly that the Lightning would be interested in acquiring Brayden Schenn, Sergei Bobrovsky and a future No. 1 draft pick in exchange for Stamkos. Though Holmgren expects Stamkos will eventually re-sign with the Bolts, there are indications he is prepared to make a trade offer if it doesn’t happen.

So that means we would have traded Carter + Richards + Bobrovsky + 1st for Stamkos + Voracek + Couturier + Simmonds + 2nd + 3rd.

That would make this off season a little easier to swallow.

5 years, 37 million for Stamkos is the type of deal i thought Stamkos could sign. Not the stupid 9,10,11 year deals proposed.

well the thing is they would have to be thrown in to make the salaries work. And that would work out great for us. One year with clark and we could go after a big name free agent dman(suter)

If Stevie Y doesn't demand Giroux in return, then it's a fail on his part.

I'd find another way to make it work then. Losing Mez would be a huge loss to a blue line that's going to have to be much better this year. I'm with GKJ on this though, ain't happening.
