The Caps are super deep on the wings, and really have needs at center and on defense.

That said, there's no way they don't do this. You simply don't pass up this kind of value. There's a number of directions they could go to replace Wideman in the lineup.

Mps + cap dump (horcoff) for green would look better NEXT off season.

Kuznetsov and Holtby are both worth more than MPS and should be untouchable as they are the future for this the Caps. Even it it by throwing in a 3rd rounder, not one of our top prospects!

How about Wideman for a pick, say ANA 2nd 2013?

Whitney-Wideman
Barker-Gilbert
Smid-Peckham

That's actually a decent defense. Nothing special, but a vast improvement over the farce back there last year. Plus, Wideman only has one year left on his contract and thus could likely fetch at least a 3rd at the deadline. It seems like a cheap way to bring in defensive help, and it sounds as if Washington might have the defensive depth to be able to make a move like this.

I don't know if you noticed the Capitals are in WIN NOW MODE we are not going to be trading players away for picks prospects. Trading Wideman only creates a hole which we would then have to fill. A second rounder would be decent if we were trying to move him but the Caps aren't and seem to be pleased with what Wideman brought to the team.

No I don't think you are. Wideman was simply outstanding with the Caps. Green got injured and Wideman stepped right in and many nights led the team in icetime. Not only is he an excellent passer but he was more physical than I thought. Not afraid to hit or get hit.

Caps wouldn't pass this up tho. Oilers are rebuilding and if they really want Wideman they should just wait til the offseason when he is a UFA.

How about not a chance? The amount of overpayment you'd have to give to get Carlson would be cost prohibitive.

Carlzner will go nowhere until they hit UFA and choose to.

Wideman was excellent for the Caps last year, missed during the playoffs, and they're hoping for a solid performance from him this year. He's also a veteran at a position where they need one, where MPS is a forward who is still developing, and less useful for a title push in 2012. They certainly wouldn't give him away for a pick. They need him right now, not futures.

Now that said, is MPS worth more than Wideman on value grounds? Yes, I think most would agree that is the case.

Carlson is simply not available. No histrionics, no outlandish overrating or anything needed. Just... no conversation to be had where Carlson and Alzner are concerned.

drake is on target. if this were fantasy hockey mps is probably worth more. no matter how good he is, though, where is the need on the wing for the caps. do the caps not already have more young players than recommended for a cup contender?

Yes. And I wouldn't expect Gilbert to bring back a player of Paajarvi's calibre either.

I would have to wonder why your trying to trade for Wideman the, defence is not his strong suit.

Caps need a solid 2nd line Center... AND trading Wideman opens up 22 minutes of ice time on the blue line for Washington, which is about 2nd pairing...

if the above bolded is your opinion then you haven't seen Wideman play much in the past couple of years... he's a solid D, with good offensive instincts... he's a bargain at under $4mil for this coming season.

The 84 in his name must mean he is 84 years old and thus hopelessly senile.
