Conversely, Redden was overapaid coming off seasons where his production was trending downward.
I agree with your point about Redden being on the decline when he got his contract, which makes it worse, but your Drury goal numbers are off. He was coming off a 30 and a 37 goal season, not that it matters much, because I agree past performance was a factor obviously in his payday, but I just cant imagine the intangibles weren't a factor in pushing his salary up.
I mean before the 30 and 27 goal seasons in buffalo, his career high in goals was 24.

It's obviously just my opinion as I dont know what Sather was thinking when he signed Drury, I just dont see how something other than the numbers didnt push him to over 7 mill.
Maybe it was just stupidity on Sathers part, but I dont see how he could have thought a guy in his 30's was on the rise.

It's a comparables game. Cally with his slightly better points per game and leadership role probably wants a slightly better contract than Dubisnky got. The NYR on the other hand probably wants to pay him Dubi money. Each side has no point to hurry things along to make you happy, so on the 27th or morning of 28th, they'll sit down, probably meet in the middle of the small difference, and we can all start debating what we're going to do with the few pesos of cap space we have left. Either way I see it at 4.5 a year. That's fine.
Told yas. You know its the offseason (or a three game slump in December) when people start overreacting about the obvious.

Good deal for the team, the Rangers, everyone. Three year window where have a good core and can actually win starts September 15

Dubinsky got $500,000 in 11-12 and $1,000,000 in 12-13 as signing bonuses. Upfront money. Counts as part of the salary. If there is a labor situation in 12-13,Dubinsky and Callahan have already received $1M of the salaries. Richards is getting $8M of his $12M salary in 12-13 as a signing bonus. $10M of the $12M this season is a signing bonus. Richards will get $20M of the $24M in the first two years in the next 12 months. Protects him against a work stoppage.

Well, I wanted 5 years, but with the quotes after the fact, I think it makes sense.

Seems to me that the Rangers are comfortable with Cally at around $4.3MM AAV, but not much above it. Understandably from Cally's point of view, if he was going to give up his 3rd/4th/5th UFA years, he wanted an escalating dollar value (likely above $5MM in each year) to make the commitment. Each subsequent year would've upped the cap hit to a higher amount - and for a longer period (obviously) - than the Rangers were willing to accept.

So, they agreed to a shorter deal - and they'll revisit in his 3rd year. Makes sense. Still locks up another core piece for multiple years. Loving where this team is salary-cap-wise right now. Other than Prust (who should be eminently signable without breaking the bank), there are no important players coming up for re-signing next year. There are no important players going to UFA (again, other than Prust next year) coming up for UFA for three years.

This is a good thing.

Not sure if this is posted already, but a tweet from capgeek says;

With the Callahan re-signing, the #NYRangers have the No. 4 #NHL payroll at $63.6m

Thats crazy hes going to UFA in 3 years, but a lot can happen until then. The agent has to say that if he indeed wants to resign, hes just looking out for his client. Very happy its at least 3 years, and as some have mentioned with the way he plays this might not be a bad thing necessarily. Plus it staggers some of the bigger signings so the Rangers dont have to go through summers like this when they need to sign a bunch of big players.

For those who are flipping out about the term, a lot can happen in 3 seasons. Look at some of the names from the 2008 squad: Prucha, Reitz, Fritsche, Kalinin, Sjostrom...Things change, a lot can happen. Not trying to downplay Callys worth - just saying that 3 years is a nice term. 1 or 2 would have been bad.

I think the Rangers know what they are doing as far as a 3 year contract.

Good deal. 5 years would've been better but that cap hit would've been around 5 mill. 3 years will do.

The only thing I hate about this is not having anything to constantly sign onto the boards from my phone to check if anyone new has been signed/etc.

Great stuff otherwise.

Have to wait and see what happens with the CBA. Might not be able to use that cap space...

That's 15 million for 8-9 players. And the cap could go down in the next CBA. Forget any ideas you have about Suter/Weber or any equally high-priced players.

It gives us cap flex, and you know one has to hope his overall game on the offensive side improves and then in 3 years he should get what he deserves.

Really wish it was at least 4 years though

3 years is too short for a guy proclaimed often as the heart and soul of the Rangers.

They better be willing to cough up big time to keep him if he progresses.

Biron, EC, Wolski, Eminger, Avery,Fedotenko, MZA. None of those names are guys we need to bring back. We may decide after this year that one or two earned another contract but that's not exactly like this year when we had to sign Cally, Dubs, etc.

Hopefully Redden finally leaves too.
Important names (or likely/possibly important) are MDZ and uhh...hmmm not much else we'll haveta wait and see a year but there could conceivably be space and a spot for a really good player.

Biron is going to want a bigger payday. It was his intention to prove that he could still be a good goalie in the NHL and get a bigger contract after this

There is no way there is a CBA cap reduction without (a) buyouts or (b) rollbacks, or (c) both.

Without such action, the rangers, and several other teams, will get killed and for not having done anything wrong. It would simply not be accepted.
