Leafs fan here, I come in peace. Great move by the Rangers, Callahan is a beast when he's healthy, great player. I can see you guys winning your division this year. Philly is weaker than they were last year, but have upgraded at the goal tending position which should make for some solid Lundqvist/Bryz battles. Clearly, the Pens could be the favorites to easily win the division if Crosby is back to 100 percent. Devils will be a lot better than last year, but Brodeur is becoming more and more inconsistent. The Islanders are the Islanders. Rangers should be a shoe in for a playoff spot and that's factoring in Gaborik only playing half the games (whether it be due to injury or just being lazy).

He could have gone to arbitration and gotten a 1 year deal. Of course 5 years would have been preferable, but 3 years is a lot better than 1 and his cap hit is manageable.

Love the cap hit, very fair for Cally...Not very happy with the terms, would of liked a long contract but hopefully he'll sign an extension towards the end, let's worry about that then and right now just wait for the season!

You guys have conformed me. I will say 3 years is much better than the arbitrated one year. Hopefully we can lock him up January 1st in his contract year...

All of you that are unhappy about this deal need to calm down.

Guys like Callahan have the potential to wear down quick. Wouldn't we look foolish if he was signed to a 5+ year deal and he breaks his leg and is out for a good chunk of time and isn't the same afterwards?

As I said a couple pages ago, Gaborik is off the books that year, which allows us plenty of wiggle room to bring Cally back if his performance up to that point warrants it.

For those that are worried about him getting a taste of the UFA market, I'm pretty sure Callahan would want to stay if Torts slaps the "C" on his chest and the team makes it past the first round of the playoffs a couple times (which is what I expect them to do at least once in the next three years).

Calm down folks, this is a good deal in which we locked up the heart and soul of this team for the forseeable future.

The hit is good, in 2 1/2 years they'll negotiate a new contract.

Thank god all of our rfa's re-signed.
I hoped for more years but I'm ok with 3. He'll re-sign after this 3 years like some poster above said before me for sure.
So let the games begin

Less than $500k is cutting it pretty close for leaving some cap room...but we'll see how it goes.

Just made perfect sense. Rangers bought 2 UFA years from Boyle, 2 from Dubinsky and now 2 from Callahan. And the Rangers won't have Staal/Dubi/Cally coming off the books the same off-season.

Good deal. It's short, but it's tough to say what exactly Callahan is going to contribute offensively in the future. This gives us enough flexibility in three years when we'll see Hank, Gaborik, Boyle, Girardi and Erixon all coming up for new contracts.

I'll be a little surprised if MZA, MDZ and Erixon all start the year in the NHL and every day that they're in the minors lowers their cap hit for if we do call them up, so we could have more than that depending on how everyone looks in camp.

I suspect the length was partially driven by Callahan wanting a Kesler type contract based on his offensive production this year and the Rangers wanting to see if this was an abberation or what they can expect every year.

Very happy with this. It is a smart move that NYR isn't giving the same term to all of these young players otherwise we would have one offseason where everyone is free which is never a good situation. As much as we all love Cally the guy plays a style where he is going to get hurt. Whether its blocking a shot, going to the net, throwing a check, or getting into the occasional fight, Callahan is all over the place which certainly increases his chance of getting hurt. Of course we love all of that but who knows what kind of toll it will take on his body (yes I know he is entering his prime). I'm very happy for this deal and excited for the season to start.

Yeah I actually think that MZA won't be in the lineup, but we'll see.

Callahan did not receive a no-trade or a no-movement clause. He said he didn't see need in a three-year deal.

The restriction clause would have started in 12-13. Group III years.
