Malone shoulder surgery: cleared for full training

#NHL news. As #Lightning celebrate Stamkos signing, they also deal with the fact Ryan Malone will not be ready to start the 2011-12 season.

Word is #Lightning Malone had surgery on his ailing shoulder recently and could be lost up to 4-6 months. A mid Dec #NHL return is projected

Knew he was beat up after postseason, but nothing led me to believe this. RT @Acehawk74: Mike, have you guys heard anything like this?
Hopefully this isn't true. Nobody here has reported anything but if so this is a big blow to our line up without Malone.

I'm not sure I buy it. I'll get depressed when someone else reports it.

Just awful news if it's true. Either we have another move left or we're fast tracking someone within the system to replace that size and grit.

Yea, I'm not totally buying this.

First off, why would this JUST now be coming out? If Yzerman knew of "this" he wouldn't have let Gagne go. More so, we would have heard of this much much earlier than July 22nd. We've heard NOTHING of this from EE, DC, or Mike C who are usually right on top of injury reports. Hell, no Bob McKenzie or Dreger either. Nothing.

Seems bogus to me right now. Kypreos hasn't exactly had a reliable summer when it comes to Lightning news either. I'll hold off on this.

This sucks. (If true) Who's gonna fill that top 6 role? Shannon? Ashton? maybe Connolly?

If true, why would he be getting surgery now? Why not right after the playoffs? Maybe he just injured it while working out? Lots of questions. I wish we could trade him, because he cannot seem to have an injury free season.

Maybe it was a situation like desjardins was in where they didn't know if surgery would actually help or if rest was the way to go so they waited a little bit, hopefully this isn't true and its just minor.

Hopefully he's okay to start the season because we are already short a top six forward.

I can't find anything on Malone even having surgery this offseason. If he did it would have been done by our Medical Director Dr. Ira Guttentag right in Tampa.

The timing is very odd, if he really needed surgery why not have it after the playoffs like any other major surgery in the NHL. Kyper says it's his ailing shoulder so it can't be a recent injury. Moreover why wouldn't Yzerman know about this? Pretty sure he would have been a lot more agressive on the player market.

If this is true it would be a huge loss. It would also make Ashton almost a lock as a Lightning next season I guess. But I'll believe it when DC, EE, MC or JJ report it.

Kypreos has been a little off this summer, but this would be a huge whiff. So weird if it's true that nobody else knows anything about it.

This is going to hurt. Ashton may be ready to make the jump, but depending on a rookie to fill Malone's spot is iffy at best.

Sooooo...did he delete this tweet or am I blinding myself with some selective denial? I don't see any of the quoted info at the linked twitter page. Not seeing confirmation from any other sources either. Granted, I wouldn't be all that surprised if Malone does need surgery that will keep him out...just not seeing anything credible, much less 'official'.

Johan Harj-oops should be kicking himself for not letting the offseason develop some before signing with Lulea...opportunity knocks...

Those links work, thanks. The original link showed the Dubinsky one as most recent, it updated now.

Yeah he should have waited to see if he could make the team in training camp before he made his decision. I guess that's what happens when you leave early and don't even give yourself a chance.

Regardless, i'm not too worried about this. This slots a handful of guys up (Jones/Ashton/Pyatt/Shannon) and that could be a great thing. I think Shannons speed on a higher line can be a significant asset, and the kid can deal the puck enough to be effective in that role.

So all the Malone to Toronto rumors were just blowing smoke, because he's going to be out until December? What madness is this?

What about Pool Noodle as his replacement?

1. Trade Ryan Malone for 7th round pick...
2. Sign Cory Stillman.
3. Sign Vinny Prospal.

Downie - Stamkos - St. Louis
Stillman - Lecavalier - Purcell
Prospal - Moore - Shannon
Hall - Thompson - Tyrell

Malone should fetch far more than a 7th round pick.

and I'll pass on Stillman. Prospal I'm honestly not too against bringing back now. He's also scheduled for a good season.

Although Prospal's not the greatest skater, he does play with intensity. I think he might thrive under Boucher.

He also knows how to play with Vinny, unlike what Malone has indicated.
